1 Hillsboro Independent. D. V. EATfl Editor and Proprietor. If Statement No. 1 means that a republican legislature is to go to Salem and elect a democratic United States senator, then we are dead against Statement No. 1. Jonathan Uourne can thank Statement No. 1 for his election, and for that reason, if for no other, Statement No. 1 should be buried about seventeen miles out of .sitfht. Irvinjr Iiath has sold his news paper, The IUindon Recorder, to a syndicate of business men of that city, and returned to Hills-, Intro Wednesday. He will re main with The Indejicndent un til he can find a location to suit, when he will again enter the newspaper field on his own account. John 11 Uailey, of I!uxton, was in town yesterday and to a re porter of this paper announced that he had about made up his mind to enter the race for the Horn ination for county commis sioner. The neoiile of that end of the county say they are enti tied to a commissioner, and their choice has fallen to Mr. Bailey. nesday at a boarding house in Linnton and taken to the home f HWh Minns, of Blackstone street, where the old man is stop ping. Few men know the needs or are better qualified to hold the p sition of commissioner than Mr. Mcfiran, and, as he an nounces in his card published elsew here, if nominated and elec ted. Editor Independent: So think mv correspondence a strong." and you read more papers very likely than iud. rui mj self. I believe I have only voiced the expressions of others in editor ials and reporters; even our much esteemed president has expressed himself as to the fraudulent actions nf wealth and combines. One pays straight S5 cents each way With the aid of cheap Japs as sec tion men, in addition, the road should manage to pay taxes and running expenses at least. Prof. Chas. Hanson, formerly principal of Sherwood school, was in town Saturday on his way to the city. Prof. Hanson has charge of a school in the Wonderleigh neighborhood about three or lour miles west of this place on the mountain range. Dr. W. D. Wood, of this city, will make the race for the repub lican nomination for senator from this district. " There is no man better known in Washington county, or one more fitted to oc cupy the position of senator than Dr. Wood, lie was born forty five years ago at Glencoe, in this county, has lived here all his life, and his nomination and election means much to this district. The day has come when the state needs live and energetic men for sena tors and representatives, so that the record of the next session at Salem shall not go down in his tory as did that of last winter and previous ones not forgotten by the voters of this district and all over the state, and if we are not mistaken the electors will see that men of integrity and "sand" will be elected to represent them. Dr. Wood is such a man, and the people will not have to look along the top and both sides of the fence to find him. But a fmall proportion of the legal voters have tound time so far to call upon him and register. Some individual unknown here, having an animosity toward the dog fraternity, has been quietly gratifying the same by dealing out poison of some nature. Several deaths have occurred among the cur family during the week and the owners thereof are highly in dignaut at the result. Fred Epler, cashier of the Bank of Sherwood, reports deposits in that institution, since the com mencement of business to the pres ent time, ot upwards of $40,000, while the bank is yet a fledgling in financial affairs, the ultimate outcome indicate prosperity and success. Sherwood pupils attending col lege at Newberg report an epidem tc ot mumps prevailing in that vi cinity. The surveyors for the Hills loro branch of the Orecron Elec trie line have been working near this place for several days. Can t you see tuat uuman nature wuus i ward monarchy that way, and agrauili.eiucul points b'uiik against the constitution of the United States: and as an alien, come to cast my lot with the New World, I had to foreswear my own allegiance to mv own country The very country that we try to copy in its laws and yet the na tive bom and educated Americans pander to the very things that we are supposed to have given up for the cause of liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Pshaw! Why the foreigners when once located here are more loyal to the country of their adoption than ate the full blood of their own. Can we then not speak out our thoughts as to their adopted coun try of which we expect so much? tor forty years I have claimed this as my own, and as my own I claim a right to the freedom of the press to condemn the actions ot those placed in power to administer to the welfare of the nation. For thirty years or more I have cast my vote with the present adininis tration because I believe iu their ability to make this country pros perous. They have, but they have allowed "too" much "lilierty" to wealth, until it is money that rules, not honesty and patriotism; and I shall continue to condemn when I can. It cannot be stopped. What we want in this country is less law and more justice. As it is now, the anus ol justice are defeated by what is call ed the brilliancy of the law. The less law the more perfect justice being dealt out by honesty and purity. That is the base for a nation to stand 011, and it will never totter 011 its foundation. I presume some one will say most of those people out of employ ment are tramps and people that don't care for work if they can get along without it. Let me say that in New Zealand, a country of about 900,000 people, about the size of Kansas, has no such people as tramps, because they have the most perfect government known to the world (co-operative). Money does rule there, llecause the people do. There are 110 land frauds operating there. The government controls the railroads. New Zealand builds her own railroads and has 22,000 miles, costing So millions and says taxation is mostly singletax and they have a progressive income tax. The poor are taken care of and so is old age by pensions. They have postal savings banks. Count ing that as a state, what one state can do, others can do as well. That government runs the telephones, telegraphs, rating 500 per cent less than our Western Union, and pays a profit. Such is the government we should aspire to have and pros-Ir- Albert O. Yates.
