It is OUR Business To see that your wheel i and to pive absolute satisfaction we euarantee every piece of work that is turned out by F. R. Dailey's K I! ITHLI CAN t'A M l A KIN. Continued From First l'ago.J sires to make this completely a re public. state, while the other seeks to fill as many offices as pos sible with democrats. The demo cratic candidate wishes this state to send a democrat to the United States senate, two democrats to the House of Representatives, put a de mocrat upon the supreme bench and continue Fortland and Multno mah county as democratic strong holds. The republican candidate advocates the filling of these offices with republicans, who can be count ed upon to support a republican national administration in all things. The republican nominee is the can didate of no faction, for he has been affiliated with no faction in the past. He is a republican without limitation or qualification and, if elected, as he will be if he lives un til election day, he will lead the work of healinor the sores from which the party has suffered in the past. Oregonian, May 9. The Trusts Against the People. The liquor trust, like the other trusts, has set out to fight the equal auffrage aiiieiuliiient. The Brewer' and Whole sale Liquor Healers' Association of Ore gon has aunt out to all the retail liquor sellers a secret circular, declaring that "it will take 60,000 votes to defeat woman suffrage," ami urging each ot the 'J0O0 retailers to secure 25 votes against it. The circular aaya: "Every retailer can get 25 votes. ISesidea bia employees, he baa his grocer, his butch er, his landlord, bis laundryman, and every person be does business with." The bint of the wholesale dealers to the retail dealers to coerce their tradespeo ple Is quite in line with ordinary trans portation methods. The circular encloxes a postal card for reply, with the significant remark. "You need not sign the card. Every card has a number, and we will know who sent it in." Tho liquor trust takes it for granted that the people who will stoop to help it in this dirty work will not want to let their names be known, even to the postman. When it is thought necessary that even a return postal card should be anonymous, it shows that public sentiment in favor of giving freedom to the mothers and and sisters of Oregon must be strong in deed, Otherwise its enemies would not be anxious to cover their tracka. Thia secret circular from the liquor trust has been made public and is likely to turn out a boomerang. Oregon Equal Suffrage Ais'n I'se Alti-Tone. Field, Garden and sale at U. II. The new local Upper Columbia river train put on by the Oregon Railroad & Navigation Company, May 20, will do much toward at trading tourists to points along the river betwteen Portland and The Dalles. The new train leaving Portland as it does, at 8:15 a. m and arriving at Portland at 6:00 p m., the same day, gives one an op portunity to spend the day at some of the delightful places along the Upper Columbia river, and permits them to return home the same day The train is made up of baggage car and coaches, and stops at al, points in both directions so as to accomodate local travel as much as possible. The lightness of the train, however, permits it to run at a high rate of speed between sta tions, so that even with stops, good time is made. There are many beautiful places along the river, such as, Rooster Rock. Latourelle, Multnomah Palls Boneville, at which a day's outing and picnic can be enjoyed to the ut. termost aud this new service makes it possible to take such outings, whereas, in the past, when the ser vice has been performed by heavy through trains, it has not been pos si Die to do this. Columbia ;toutheia passengers instead of waiting at Biggs, which is unattractive, are taken to The Dalles promptly where they await the train for Portland, coming in on No. t, as at present, or taking the local, as they may desire. Colonist Rates. Commencing February 15th and con tinuing daily to and Including; April 7th 1W6, and from September 15th until Oc tober 31st, ltKJrt, colonist ticket will be aold from the east to points on Oregon lines via Portland. The HlgQ Court of the Nation. It Is Indicative of the conservative nature of the supreme court of the United States that this high tribunal has bad but seven chief justices, not counting Rutledge, whose tenure was nominal, since Us establishment under Washington's administration 117 years ago. Chief Justice Fuller, the present Incumbent, with eighteen years of sorv Ice, has exceeded the average by two years. Marshall served for thirty-rour years, and Marshall and Tauey tojreth er occupied the chief Justiceship for sixty-three years from 1801 to ist',4. A Justice of the supreme court may bold ofllce "during good behavior." The chief Justice Is paid a sulury of $13,000, and the associate Justices draw $12,- C00 a year. Several of the associate Justices have made long records on the bench, among them Story aud Field, who each served thirty-four yeiirs. Mc Lean of Ohio and Wayne of Georgia each served thirty-two years. Bushrod Washington of Virginia served thirty one years, and Harlan has a record of twenty-nine years.
