Rollin Brooks, of Htholls, was a caller here during the week, this being Lis first visit to the place for a number of years. J. W. It is reported that Miss Oslturn, daughter of Dr. Osburn, lately deceused at Wilaonville, died in a Portland hos pital during the week, of rlieuinatiain of the heart. John Smith, of Sherwood, underwent an operation for the removal of an eye recently by a city secialist. He is con Taleeing and is well pleased with the re suit of the operation. Bert Ifager, a farmer of Middleton, is one of the nnfortuuate class, as on Fri day morning early he went to his barn to feed his stock, and carried a lantern Into the hay loft. The lantern which was accidentally upset, fell to the floor below through the scuttle, and set the premise on fire. lie succeeded in sav ing his stock, harness and wagon but a valuable separator, hay, feed ami barn was quickly comaumed. The loss is heavy and but little insurance was held upon the property, probably $1,000 would be required to replace the dam ages. Mr. Bowman, a resident of New berg has been buying timber hind in tho vi cinlty of Beartown, three miles east of this place, and rumor reports that it is hit intention to purchase a sawmill plant and begin manufacturing lumber in the near future. We know that the people of both Scholls and Mountain Side will be glad to know that Mrs. Grace Lawrence, who went down to San Francisco to be treat ed for cancer, has had a successful opera tion and has returned home. Some of the boys who were in that race war on account of Japs being hired atGroner's Mill, have gone back to work, the others are holding out yet. I suppose they are afraid of the yellow peril.
