The Inleid ed sale had been advertised ia a little two Inch paragraph a provided by a law stealthily enacted during the last hour of the laat legislative ses sion. It was said that the new, papers should not fatten at the ex pense of the taxpayer wherefore the law was ho wr.tten that the tracts of land should not be described. Ouly a little notice cutting five or six dol lars was nect.ij.sary to give notice ol the time of sale. Relics of the old mortgage tax law are abundant. Ex ample. The mortgagee was required to pay the m:rtgige tax. It fre quently happened that the last lax levied was not paid since on payment of the last Installment the interest of the mortgagee became naught. The owner of the land thinking ill claims aiiinst his property being sal idled rented easy. Iho county bought the projwrly on delinquent tx sale. After two jears the county wU a fee simple title, and under the new law limy fell and realize. In Union last week one block worth many thou sands was sold for 124 00. The pur chaser got Independent . and saucy saying: "This property is worth more, but not to be hard on you oc cupants you can have it for f.r000." Due farmer's home went for 3 00. The farmer went to the purchaser and tendered the purchase price which was loftily refu1. "Very well. I will give you till tomorrow morning to decide whether you will take $3.00 or whether I shall pay your asking price to your estate." He took the 13.60 and gave a quit claim. The frenrie runs so high that the sheriff dare not accept a bid. He is adjourning the salt from day to day till some way out of the muddle may be Jevlsed. In this county there is much pro perty against which there is an un paid mortgage tax, but the county has not yet bought it in and hence will not for a time offer it for sale. Yet the tax must be colloc ed. It Is a debt due the county and the owners of the laud ought to pay or require the motgagee to pay. Persons in teres ted should at once look after the matter. THE REAL CONTEST. The public must not allow itself to be deceived by the labor strikes now agitating the industrial centers. It must not suppose that the contention Is between labor and capital. The real fight is between selfish "Union" labortfhd free labor. It is not even as some suppose, between skilled lu ' bor and labor,pretending to be skill hor and labor pretending to be skill ed. Capital as. only a tool used by a labor agitators to further" si-lfili in tcreats and the real laborers who con stitute the rank and file of the lodges are abject serfs who are compelled to do the bidding of the agitators. It has been the boast of both the steel striker in Pennsylvania and the teamsters In San Francisco thbt wages ia not the matter in conten tion but the recognition of the "union." There are not a handful or peinous in the United States who want to seize any territory in Oulral or South America. Both Central and South America are indebted to the United States for the indepen dence which they possess. United States example incited them, to rise against Spain lu the first quarter of the recent century. Near the close of that quarter or in 1822, the United States recognized them and welcom ed them into the family of nations. A year later, in Monroe's hands off. the-Amerlcan-continent warning, the United States protected them from seizure by Europe. Iu 1866, when this country sent Napoleon III out of Mexico, it gave another evidence of its unselfish friendship foi the Iat in-American countries. This European talk about the Uni ted States' alleged purpose to appro priate territory In Central or South America is too foolish to demand much attention In this country. In the present quarrel between Vene zuela and Colombia the legitimate business interests of Americans in those two countries are in danger This is one reason for the presi mi! of Unilod Stat s war vessels in tlii Caribbean.
