The democrats in 18U7 had it iu their power to enter the house of re-preet-ulalivea at ttaieui, aud organize it for business. It was their duty to do so, but they stayed out. Now, Will the uieu elected in Wasluugtou county last Monday stay out aud agaiu prevent organization? The next legislature will have a republican uiujoriiy. The caucus will be used for its legitimate pur potto. lU'publicaua will attend iu The standard republican who devel. opus most strength will be nomi nated, lie will tie elected on the llrt ballot, wheu the senatorial prob lem will be solved. The Southern 1'aciUo Company is doing a good deal of work on the road from WooUburu to Matron, and has tii Japanese at work near Snel buru. They are practically rebuild ing the line, aud are taking out all old ties aud putting in new ones, which have been put through the bcrnatizing plant aud are supposed to be good for a number of years' servioe. lu 11)1)6, Congressman Tongue beat Vauderburg by a plurality of 73 votes. In 18UA be beat Veatch by 2022 votes. This year he leads by 8000 or more. This reaka well for both Mr. Tongue and bis supporters. The first because be has worth which he exercises, and the second, his people hava wit enough to recog nize a good representative when they see him. Tin' Chinese question is more criti cal. The lloxers continue their riot ing. Another American warship lias been ordered to the Chinese dis turbed water. Japan objects to the landing of Kusslan troops In villus, and is reported to be concentrating her fighting atiuadrona. It is pro jHwed to put all the lighting squad rons of the foreign nations under the command of one admiral, but the name of the commander Is not sug gested. Monday's election was the most stubbornly contested of any held in this city for years. The fate of the clerk, recorder, commissioner and congressman hung on the returns of each la-latcd precinct. At the time of going to preNH, with complete re turns froiu all precincts except Dusty, Alsea, Dlodgctt and King's Valley, Indications pointed to a ma jority for Tongue in this county of from 30 to 50. As usual tne repul 11 cans have elected the legislative ticket, aud the lucrative olllcca have gone to the democrats. t'orvilli Time. The Oregonian makes a mistake when It charges the defeat of the re publican legislative ticket t the Me- Hride influence'. The defeat rather is duo to the men, who, heretofore, have acted with the Oorhctt-Simon management, aud are now utterly disgusted with their mtthodx. Those are the men who did the work, for If they had voted as they did two years ago, republican candidates would have been elected as they weie in ISOS. To further prove that Mi Bride did not do it, note the vote of Columbia county, McllriJe's home. Had Senator McBride or Ma friends refused suport to the ticket, Cornelius, for Joint senator, would have len beaten. Yet MeBride's own county Is the only place In the district w here Cornelius got a iimjor Ity. The Oregonian should revise Its style of criticism. Lt.tX7WX AXD At'TEHWAIiDA The republican paity was beaten in Ihls county last Monday, but there Is no loss of republican voters. There Is no change of political principles. The slump is to be attributed t! local conditions. A good many republi cans got an idea that the party in Ibis county waa being organized from Multnomah council chambers and they determined lo sbow posi tive displeasure. It is only a rept ti tion of what occurred about 18 years ago, only then Mitchell waa the bows. Washington county w ill not be dic tated to by Portland Immmcs. It was not so this year, but the voters got that idea which amounted lo the same thing. The parly in Multno mah county has suffered the same kind of a defeat that causes u- to smart her. The Oregonian com menting on it says i Iu the result in Multnomah coun ty there is a lesson that Is sUuVieutiy clear. In a county where the domi nant party possesses an ambitious, powerful and disgruntled faction that U ready at all times t combine with the opposition, it is the part of wis dom to pursue a conciliatory course t iward such faction. The Oregonian suggested such policy, at the begin ning of the contest for the noinina lions this year. It was not heeded. What has followed Is matter of course." The advice was good for Multno mah county, but in tiuth waa not needed here. It was truly not heed ed there, not even by the Oregonian Itself, for it hs viciously wielded the lash since the conventions. Men will not be driven. They will carry out their policies on some ether line. The defeat of the Multnomah people probably means the withdrawal of Corbett from the senatorial race this fall. In this county bis candidacy ought to have cut o figure because no one was pledged lo his support. Neith er did Mr. MeBride's candidacy influ euceany one here. There Is no one here who neeJs scolding. No one must lie scolded. But as republican we must plan together for victory next time. There Is no one in the county, uo republican, who does not desire the success of the party, but different Individuals may desire to bring the thing about by different methods. We must be willing to give up our Individual ways of doing things and concede to our associates the privilege of advising in party councils. Above all must trading combinations be abandoned. "You tickle me and I'll tickle you" is not good politics. Two years ago when there was a break In the lines, the Imiei'E.nuknt said: "The party can be certain of noth ing in this county without the aid of these votes that have been given to the opposition In this one instance. It is idle to charge that Ihey are pop ulists. They are not. They are for sound money. Some hasty spirits under the smart of defeat have per mi'.t.Hl words to escape which should remain unsaid We need every re publican vote for future elections just as we have la past contests." What was true then" is true now, aud we must proceed at once to gather up our strength for future dibit. THE A KMC AS WAB. The British column under Roberts in South Africa has been uniformity successful. Johannesburg the min ing metropolis has been occupied. Pretoria the capital has been captur ed, though the Boer army, the real objective, is yet at large. Butler seems to.be having trouble at Laings ueck. A three days armistice has beeu agreed t by him with Oeneral Botha. This may mean surrender or it may mean burying of the dead LP SALT K1VEK. Away back in 40's, when Henry jay was at the height of his fame and popularity, there was an import ant election campaign on in Ken tucky. The whigs were in the ma jority, though the democrats were crowding them closely. Clay was one of the principal campaign sinkers, and his oratory was in de mand everywhere. At one plate upon the Ohio river, the whig caute was in great danger, and it was nec essary for effective work to be done. To this danger point Clay himself was assigned. The tqieaklng was to occur the day laforo election, but Clay was f.ir down the river with uo convey auce but a row boat. The democrats knew the ffet t of Clay's speech, and that unless they could break its force, they would lie beaten. Clay had to go up the river In an open row boat, but being no oarsman lie had to hire n man. Now, the party was an Irishman, and a democrat to boot. The t em's got t the ear of the boat man with logic quite as silvery as Clays stump speeches. "Bedad and Oi'l take kare of Mister Clay." Ou the way up the mouth of Salt creek was reached. Pondering on ublic affairs, Clay did not notice that they were no longer ou the broad Ohio, but tin a smaller strearc. The Irish man was greatly agitated some hours later, when ihey did not arrive at their destination. It was too late, (hough lo retrace their sle and go up the right branch, wherefore Clay had to swallow his wrth, and bis frit nds had to endure their diss p. polntment. Next day, at the election, the whips were defeated. It was a per fivt landslide. The democrats were highly elated, of course, and guyed the whigs without mercy. They would call from street-side to street sldci "Where Is Mr. Clay? Why, have you not heard? He has gone up Sail river." Ever si uce that day in the wttt, going up ' Salt rivtr" l the jeering which defeated Caudi dates have dinned into their pais. We have heard It a time or two thw week. SB. IIA1KM,10 U13KUUS. Mr ATE l'lUSS. This is written while the vote of Oregon is being lakeu but It does not require a propht t to predict that the returns will show that Ongon has rolled up a big majority for expan sion, sound money and good times. The head center ol Bryanism and anli-expausion in the eat will look In vain to this state for endorsement of t.ielr national policy. There will not be a grain of comfort in the re sult for them. Three or four men cacnt t own a political party, treat It as a propel ty and do as they please with it. Ore gonian, Hi ley L. Moss, a man of uncertain character enticed his wife, Naomi Clute Moss in Willamette Park, Portland, on Thursday evening of last week and shot her through the heart. The report of his pistol was heard, and searchers hunted for the victim, but her remains were nol found till next morning. Moss was suspected, but he was not found unti Saturday evening when bis suicidal pistol shot was heard, in a lodging where his lifeless body was found a few mlnufs later. Moss married Naomi Clute lai-t rail and took her to Tacoma. She seems not to have been a fln-t class woman, while he was anything' but a good man. Ills occupation was gambling, hence his wife's support was precarious. She htd a man friend to v. hm she con fided . her troubles. He advised a separttioo. Naomi came t ) Portland, where is her father. Soon her man friend turned up. Moss heard ol it and came over with murder in his heart. He had threatened to kill, but his wife treated his talk as Idle tales. She thought he would make a fine spectacle on the scaffold, - He replied that lit! would escape because of insanity. "Do you want another proof that congress is controlled by the trusts. A Joint resolution proposing an amendment to the constitution em powering congress to regulate the trusts was last week introduced in congress. The resolution required a two-thirds vole, which it fulled to get. This shows the power of the trui-t." ' Why did not Ihe Oregon Independent, Guild's paper, not Tongue's, which published the above, go a step further and sty that not a populist, nor a democrat, sae two, voted for the amendment. The republicans voted for it in a body, except four. Tongue voted for the amendmert What is that about a half-t Id trt.t-'i. The elexttoti returns indicate thft Congressman Tongue has carried every county in his district except Linn, and Is elected by over 3000 plurality, at leart by ail increased majority of foHj, Congressman Mxdy, Supreme Judge C.
