Tin' Chinese question is more criti

stubbornly contested of any held in

The Oregonian makes a mistake
when It charges the defeat of the re
publican legislative ticket t the Me-
Hride influence'. The defeat rather
is duo to the men, who, heretofore,
have acted with the Oorhctt-Simon

disgusted with their mtthodx. Those
are the men who did the work, for
If they had voted as they did two

of Columbia county, McllriJe's
home. Had Senator McBride or Ma
friends refused suport to the ticket,
Cornelius, for Joint senator, would
have len beaten. Yet MeBride's
own county Is the only place In the
district w here Cornelius got a iimjor
Ity. The Oregonian should revise
Its style of criticism.
Lt.tX7WX AXD At'TEHWAIiDA
The republican paity was beaten
in Ihls county last Monday, but there
Is no loss of republican voters. There
Is no change of political principles.
The slump is to be attributed t! local
conditions. A good many republi
cans got an idea that the party in
Ibis county waa being organized
from Multnomah council chambers
and they determined lo sbow posi
tive displeasure. It is only a rept ti
tion of what occurred about 18 years
ago, only then Mitchell waa the bows.
Washington county w ill not be dic
tated to by Portland Immmcs. It was
not so this year, but the voters got
that idea which amounted lo the
same thing. The parly in Multno
mah county has suffered the same
kind of a defeat that causes u- to
smart her. The Oregonian com
menting on it says i
Iu the result in Multnomah coun
ty there is a lesson that Is sUuVieutiy
clear. In a county where the domi
nant party possesses an ambitious,
powerful and disgruntled faction that
U ready at all times t combine with
the opposition, it is the part of wis
dom to pursue a conciliatory course
t iward such faction. The Oregonian
suggested such policy, at the begin
ning of the contest for the noinina
lions this year. It was not heeded.
What has followed Is matter of
course."
The advice was good for Multno
mah county, but in tiuth waa not
needed here. It was truly not heed
ed there, not even by the Oregonian
Itself, for it hs viciously wielded the
lash since the conventions. Men will
not be driven. They will carry out
their policies on some ether line.
The defeat of the Multnomah people
probably means the withdrawal of
Corbett from the senatorial race this
fall. In this county bis candidacy
ought to have cut o figure because no
one was pledged lo his support. Neith
er did Mr. MeBride's candidacy influ
euceany one here. There Is no one
here who neeJs scolding. No one
must lie scolded. But as republican
we must plan together for victory
next time. There Is no one in the
county, uo republican, who does not
desire the success of the party, but
different Individuals may desire to
bring the thing about by different
methods. We must be willing to
give up our Individual ways of doing
things and concede to our associates
the privilege of advising in party
councils. Above all must trading
combinations be abandoned. "You
tickle me and I'll tickle you" is not
good politics. Two years ago when
there was a break In the lines, the
Imiei'E.nuknt said:
"The party can be certain of noth
ing in this county without the aid of
these votes that have been given to
the opposition In this one instance.
It is idle to charge that Ihey are pop
ulists. They are not. They are for
sound money. Some hasty spirits
under the smart of defeat have per
mi'.t.Hl words to escape which should
remain unsaid We need every re
publican vote for future elections just
as we have la past contests."
What was true then" is true now,
aud we must proceed at once to
gather up our strength for future
dibit.

Away back in 40's, when Henry
jay was at the height of his fame
and popularity, there was an import
ant election campaign on in Ken
tucky. The whigs were in the ma
jority, though the democrats were
crowding them closely. Clay was
one of the principal campaign
sinkers, and his oratory was in de
mand everywhere. At one plate
upon the Ohio river, the whig caute
was in great danger, and it was nec
essary for effective work to be done.
To this danger point Clay himself was
assigned. The tqieaklng was to occur
the day laforo election, but Clay was
f.ir down the river with uo convey
auce but a row boat. The democrats
knew the ffet t of Clay's speech, and
that unless they could break its force,
they would lie beaten. Clay had to
go up the river In an open row boat,
but being no oarsman lie had to hire
n man. Now, the party was an
Irishman, and a democrat to boot.
The t em's got t the ear of the boat
man with logic quite as silvery as
Clays stump speeches. "Bedad and
Oi'l take kare of Mister Clay." Ou
the way up the mouth of Salt creek
was reached. Pondering on ublic
affairs, Clay did not notice that they
were no longer ou the broad Ohio,
but tin a smaller strearc. The Irish
man was greatly agitated some hours
later, when ihey did not arrive at
their destination. It was too late,
(hough lo retrace their sle and go
up the right branch, wherefore Clay
had to swallow his wrth, and bis
frit nds had to endure their diss p.
polntment.
Next day, at the election, the
whips were defeated. It was a per
fivt landslide. The democrats were
highly elated, of course, and guyed
the whigs without mercy. They
would call from street-side to street
sldci "Where Is Mr. Clay? Why,
have you not heard? He has gone
up Sail river." Ever si uce that day
