"I beg pardon; I ought to have

It will be admitted that I was pick
ing up information. I had learned that
I waa supposed to be Hank Beyer, son
of Major Hugh Beyer, who lived some
where in the neighborhood. My com
panions were Squire Uager and Laud
lora Tom uuinuun, wnose wire s name
waa Mag, and they had no living chil
dren. Moreover, my father wus suspect
ed of holding matrimonial inteutions
toward a certain Widow Perkins.
All this waa interesting, but not
equal to that which speedily followed.
That old age is entitled to certain privl
leges waa proved by the next remark of
the landlord, who removed his pipe
from pis month and asked with
chuckle:
"And how's Esther?"
The question was a startling one, aud
but for what he had said a few minutes
before I should have suspeoted he re
forred to a sister or relative, bat it was
clear that be bad a tenderer relation in
mind. I blushed and auswered offhand,
with a light laugh:
"She's as blooming aa a peach, the
queen of her sex.
"A right likely gal and no mistake,"
was the hearty comment of the squire.
"She'll have a fine plantation when the

It seemed now that the fnrce bad
gone far enough, and I waa on the point
of breaking into ringing laughter and
assuring my friends that I was not only
not I lank Beyer, but had not the re

young gentleman, whom I had never

but these delightful old fellows oozed

substantial meal.

It takes rough experience like mine
had been to appreciate true southern
hospital ity. The meal of pone, corn
bread and bacon, with fragrant coffee,
was one of the moat enjoyable of my
life, for it was seasoned with the most
powerful of all saocea hanger. Aunt
Meg, aa she waa called by all, was
motherly nostras, who waited on me
with as mnch atteatlon aa if I were the
