Mr. Grant Hughes, president ot the Hughes telephone company, son of Hon. S-ml. Hugkes I'ecessed commenced iu a small way in bis owu town some years ago to connect the bu-i-ness houses by telephone. The en terprise being congenial he continued to reach out till he had an incom-pro-tlucing property He selected terri tory not occupied by any other com pany and built up Gales Creek anil to Tillamook. While he was build ing I is long distance lines he con tinually extended his Forest Grove exchunge. His sulwcribers were well served at a reasonable cost. In the meantime Banker, Anton i'launer desiring to be more closely connected with the county l tibials built a line to Hillslioro. When he failed his telephone line was bought by the Hughes Compaiiy they being the only bidders. Soon the O. T. A T, Co. persuing well matured plans bKik steps to put in an exchange at Forest Grove. The interests of the t n o companies at once clashed and there was war at once. Thia was only two months ago. The O T. A T. Co. ilaced several instruments notwithstanding they found it diffi cult to set jMiles. The Hughes people commenced at once to build toward Portland. Rapid work was determined uisin. W ithin six weeks the poles were sawed distributed, set and the wire was strung from Hillsboro to the city limits of Portland, where the city exchange of the Columbia Com pauy was met. This, not a very great undertaking for summer weath er, was a soft anil damp Job for the winter when it was done. Connec tion was made last Sunda evening, and by Tuesday the line was ready for commercial business, the com pany holds to its first policy of oc cupying new territory when such can be found, hence the line iroiu Hillsboro goes north of the O. T. A T. Go's line touching at Nelsons and at Cedar Mills. The line is what is known as a metalic circuit anil is well and substantially built. Mr. Hughes is in- posneion of some trade secrets which seems not to lie used on the old line so that a con versation over the Hughes line is much more satisfactory than is sometimes the caseover the old one. riie ringing buzzing and sputtering that is ao annoying with the O. T. tic T. Co. is not met on the other line. The treatment of the Hughes Co. Is very lils-ral. Subscribers at Forest Grove, Hillsboro, Cornelius, Gales Creek, Mountaiudale, Nelsons and Cedar Mills, have Iree use of the 'phone. The tariff to Portland is 25 cents per conversation and there are some concessions connected that makes the line a desirable one to pat ronize. Besides the stations named the Hughes system reaches Tilla mook, Nehalem and in a few weeks will be at Astoria. Going south there are instruments at Sherwood, Tualatin, Newberg, Lafayette and McMinnville. Mr. Hughes does not solicit the patronage of the public of this county so much because he U a fellow citizen as he does because he can give a prompt and superior ser vice. The people though will encour age the lice that reaches out to all parts of the county and brings I ha distant hamlets into instant com munication with the center. A llb I'ltt E OK tOLOK WORK.
