He said "The battle of the standards must be fought out this fall and again in 1900. It is a fight between tiie gold standnrd and the free coinage of sil ver, and there in la no getting around the issue. For my part, I am ready for the contest. I shall go iu to it with a conviction that right will prevail and that the triumph of a sound financial policy w.U be over whelming. Of course, we know that it is possible to cumber matters some what and that some men who be lieve in the gold standard and in maintaining the parity of all money may be frightened by the proposition to retire the greenbacks, and the var ious proH wit ions for a national bank tug system, and hesitate atsiut vot ing for the safe and sound financial policy. lU'presentative Tongue had a talk with the speaker alsjut the condition in Oregon. Mr. Heed has manifest ed a great dual of luterest in the state, and the conditions that exist, because he realizes that the results in Oregon cauuot but have their effect upon the campaigns for congress in the other states. Mr. Tongue told the sis-aker that ( regon was a gold-standard state, that while some s-ople might shy somewhat at the word, "gold," yet they Mieved in the maintenance of the present standard, and were not In favor of silver monometaiisui and the silver standard, which free coin age would mean. At tiie same time he said that there were a great many people w no were not yet ready for the retirement of the greenbacks and the substitution in their place of a national bank currency, which was theoretical iu its present shape. He told the siieaker that men who would support the republican par.y and who Mieved in the maintenance of na tional honor might ..bj.ri to the re tirement of the gns nlmcks, and w lieu a vote was lost on the ground of re tiring the greenbacks,;;. thediirerent financial measures whicn were pro posed by some of the eastern men, it was not only lt on that propositi but went over completely into the free-silver camp. There was no mid dle ground tor these men; when they did not vote for the republican can didate they would vote for a silver man out-and-out. Mr. Tongue told tiie speaker that he did not U iiove any ol me m.lio.tl incisure proimsed in congress for a complete reforma tion of the currency could le passeil. and believed that in iuhini them iiitny republican seats would I hs in the congressional elect ion a. Mr. Tongue is not the only repub lican who has such Views, :m many believe that the penpi. are rt yet educated up to the point where the more elaborate n hemes ,4 currency and they thought at once that the ship was doomed. By the time they reached the deck they saw the Maine was sinking. A large part of the crew were in their quarters. They were not able to get out, hut went down with the ship, which sank bow first, about 2HK) ln't from Fort A tarts. ('apt. Slgstiee, in all his comments today, has been very careful not to accuse anyone of U'ing the cause of the explosion. All he will say is that careful investigation will be made and it will probably determine whether interior or exterior causes produced the awful disaaler.
