Some little time ago it was found, as the result of exKTimeiits, that this shale, w hen ground and otherwise manipulated, was nn excellent material for the manufacture of bricks, nnd one or two small brickyards were started. These have proved so successful that the industry is spnading and bids fair to assume considerable propor tions. The bricks w hen burnt in n kiln nre as hard in texture and ns nsl in color as tho-e made from nil clay. The conversion of these deso late mounds of shale into a useful common'ial product will be a dis tinct industrial gain to the district, and at the same time it w ill bring a vast acreage of now unprofitable land into ue cither for ngrh-ulturol or building purpose.
