New Building A Necessity.
Some opposition to the proposed
issue o f $35,000 o f school bonds
has been cropping out on the j
grounds that a $20,000 building
would be sufficient.
If the new building is to be of
brick and concrete it must be evi- j
dent to anyone who knows any- j
thing about buildings that $20 , - 1
000 would not be enough. The
Carnegie Library of Pacific Uni­
versity cost $20,000 and it has
just one story and a basement
and not one half the floor space
that a public school building
would need.
A good frame building could
be built for less than $20,000;
but it was the emphatic senti­
ment o f the school meeting on
December 30th that the new
building should ¡be o f brick. A
motion was made at that meeting
to limit the cost o f the new build­
ing to $25,000, but it was voted
down hard, because the men pres­
ent familiar with the cost of
buildings declared that an ade­
quate brick building could not be
erected at a cost of $25,000, much
less at a cost o f $20,000.
A building containing ten or
twelve good rooms with full cem­
ent basement and up-to-date
heating plant can be built for
$35,000. Such a building would
be a credit to the town. It is
simply a matter o f business to
build permanently and well from
now on.
The sight purchased by the
Board and Advisory Committee
is admirably located on Third
avenue South and Fifth street
opposite the beautiful Rodgers
Estate, and just the same dist­
ance east of the Central build­
ing as the Lincoln building is
north, i. e., 5 blocks.
The Bond election comes on
Saturday. March 1st, from one
o'clock to 4 o ’clock p. m. at the
Central building.
