Durability of Concrete. Now is the time to v isit California * When summer has passed in these northern states, the sun is only mild under the bright blue skies of Southern Calilornia. This is one of nature’s happy provisions— eternal sum mer for those who cannot endure a more severe cli mate, California has been called the Mecca of the winter tourist ” Its hotels and stopping places are as var ied as those of all well reg ulated cities. Not long ago an article appeared in one of the county papers from the pen of an esteemed contemporary who feared for the durability of concrete work, or, as this learned gentleman termed it cement concrete." After no little research and inquiry the following is submitted to those contemplating the employment of ce ment in any of its manifold uses, that certain errors in the former article mav be cancelled by way of restoring con fidence in a reliable material. A con crete sidewalk, subjected to the humid summers and frigid winters of Phila delphia, Pa., was laid in 1858 and is still serviceaole. United States gov ernment tests, conducted with funds that were not squandered to private corporations, demonstrated that con Crete properly mixed and laid, be comes stronger with age, forming a true artificial stone (silica o( calcium with alumina.) Where failure occurs, it rises from using dirty, loamy sand, instead of sharp clean sand, round water worn pebbles, instead ol crushed rock and worst of all not using suf ficient cement in the mixture. It is well to remember that the chemical union of the several ingredients into a stony crystalline mass takes place quite slowly and requires that the work re main damp whilst it is going on.
