M ILLER, Proprietor Halloween Gaieties Academy Students Make Merry PUBLIC SCHOOL NEWS The annual reception by the uppei classes to the freshmen was given at The Colonial Hotel, Halloween. The parlors were attractively decorated with jack o’lantems and other things sug gestive of the occassion. Halloween games and tests of portrature were the order of the evening. Each person was given the name of some other person present and requested to reveal the future of that one. The results when read aloud, were a source of much merriment and showed that the prophetic spirit had certainly fallen up on the assembly. A sculptor’s test was given in which each person modeled the face of some arrival out of gum by the use of toothpicks. Quite a menagerie was collected in this way and the judges finally awarded first prize to Mr. Wirtz. The consolation prize went to Miss Wood. The freshies were put through various tortures and required to per- fcr.n one jest after another until the upper classmen were thoroughly con vinced that they had proved their eli gibility to college life, when they were invited to the dinning-room, where a sumptuous feast was spread. Cider, nuts, apples and other Halloween dainties were there in abundance and the tables presented a pretty spectacle. The gods of fate decreed that the ring should go to Mr. Hall, while the thimble was found by Mr. Peterson and the dime by Mr. Bump. Toasts were given by Messrs. Sparks, Thomas, Bump and Miss Wood. The Academy classes each observed Hallowefn as follows: The First Year class, chaperoned by Miss Bain met at the tastefully decorated home of C. N. Johnson, where Halloween games and' dainties were the order of the evening. The Second Year class had a jolly time at Mrs. A. William’s where they were chaperoned by Prof, and Mrs. Woods. They proved the fact that they are a merry class for they had a jolly time. The Third Years banqueted at The Laughlin chaperoned by Mrs. Will Fletcher and Prin. Bates. After the feast of Halloween dainties the party lepaired to the home of President Ferrin where they made merry ’till a late hour. The Fourth Year class, a party of twenty-five chaperoned by the Misses Winnie Marsh and Irene Cadwell, drove to Hillsboro, where they were royally entertained at the residence of Capt. Merryman. A witch told their fortunes while a hidden spirit made dreadful noises. A ghost ushered them into the beautifully decorated dinning room where they feasted on the season’s Halloween dainties. Miss Starrett and Miss Jackson spent Sunday in Portland. DR. D. W. WARD, Opposite Farmers and Mer Alma Clark after her somewhat ex tended visit in Cal., is back to school chants’ Bank, again.
