It would probably sur prise tho avtrago Oregon ian of today if ho should peep in upon thoee old fellows as wo saw Sat urday ageemblod in tho courthouse. They every ono of courao were grey and weighted down beneath a load of eara, but they all were of good physic and perfect types ofstal wart manhood, such as it required to redeem tha Northwest front the Indians and open it up for homes for their children.' In short iwy were a j Jly lot of old timo pioneers still possessed of some of the fire of youth and seemed as if sgain in camp after a days march after a band of Rogue river braves long ago. They talked over old times, and cracked their jokes at one another in good old jargon until lime admonished them that they would better proceed to business and hence the follow ing preccced ings were had: Captain Nolatid waa called to the chair, and J. F. Amis was made secretary. Com rade Mulkey by request proceeded to state the object of meeting, and In feeling terms refercd to tho ser vice of the Indian, war veterans. He said he couldnot understand why the Indian war veteran had been thus ignored bj the government. If it was said that those of the civil war had Ha red the natiou it was no less trre that the early pioneer who met the Indians in combat thoeo seventeen veterans were one each from tho stales of Vir Arkana. 'e ' , had saved the Northwest. Dr. Nicklin followed with a very clear and forciblo statement as to the necessity of keeping Op the asso ciation of Indian war veterans, and thought we should cease to par tition but demand recognition by the government. The Doolor said: lie thought if government could pay 120,000,000 for the Philipincs, it eurely ought to bo able to pay those Indian war veterans a small pittance during tho remainder of their lives, who through their acli n and did so much to rave to the nation - Oregou, - Waahiuglou, Idaho and Montana, in fact the great Northwest of our domain. Comrade Rowland had just re turned f.-om Portland and pro oeeded to say that ho had learned through good authority whilo at Portland, that Speaker Reed was the cause of nothing being.done for the Indian, war veterans of the West during his speakership, and advited veterans to look out for themselves and support only men for positions who would work for them. Comrade, Milo Taylor spoke forcible in behalf of the old veterans getting their rights. The meeting then selected Capt rfcaa Noland, Dr A 1 Nicklin and L B Rowland as delegates to repre sent the Lai.e county encampment at the meeting of tho grand en campment to be holdcn in Port land June 14, 1889.
