Detroit) MORE EX PEN SIV E PLANTS OFTEN PROVE CH EA PER Many vegetable grow ers who de pend upon purchasing plants of early vegetables instead of grow ing them , have the option of buying inferior plants at a cheaper price or superior plants at a som ewhat higher figure. For example, cabbage plants grown crowded together and retailing at a few cent9 a dozen, may be a decid edly inferior buy at this price com pared with others retailing at tw ice th at am ount but grown at a w ider distance ap art, m aking them consid- erbly m ore vigorous and stocky. From the standpoint of early cab bage production it will usually pay the grow er to buy the m ore vigorous and slightly m ore expensive plant. This is tru e also of lettuce, tom atoes cauliflow er, peppers and egg plant, says the O regon experim ent station. E uropean downy mildew o f hops, or ‘Spike disease,” has been found in the Pacific northw est. This is a dan gerous disease of hops and will cause serious loss to hop grow ers of O re gon if it gets a sta rt here, says the experim ent station. Diseased plants m ay be recognized by the spike-like appearance of the young shoots, caused from shorten ing of the joints and the failu re of lea\es to develop norm ally. Pale green or greyish-green color, w ith a som ew hat silvery “ sheen” on the up per surface, is one characteristic of the disease. Reddish brown angular spots are usually found along the m idribs and are caused by a fungus grow th which som etim es may be seen grow ing on the low er side of the leaf.
