or ‘Spike disease,” has been found in
the Pacific northw est. This is a dan
gerous disease of hops and will cause
serious loss to hop grow ers of O re
gon if it gets a sta rt here, says the
experim ent station.
Diseased plants m ay be recognized
by the spike-like appearance of the
young shoots, caused from shorten
ing of the joints and the failu re of
lea\es to develop norm ally. Pale
green or greyish-green color, w ith a
som ew hat silvery “ sheen” on the up
per surface, is one characteristic of
the disease. Reddish brown angular
spots are usually found along the
m idribs and are caused by a fungus
grow th which som etim es may be seen
grow ing on the low er side of the leaf.
Anyone finding suspicious plants
are asked to send them to the experi
m ent station a t Corvallis fo r identi
fication.
