FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1929 HOME POINTERS PERCENTAGE OF CHEVROL ET COMPANY FOREIGN BORN IN PREPARES FOR GREAT- STATE IS HIGH EST YEAR IN HISTORY (Oregon Voter Reporting Service) Salem, Feb. 14.— “ One in every eight o f the population of Oregon is foreign born,” said C. A. Howard, state superintendent of public in struction, in speaking o f house bill 375. “ It is often assumed that Oie- gon has not much o f a problem in Americanizing its foreign born, but the annual influx o f immigrants is considerably greater than the number naturalized in the state each year. House bill 375 will make possible fuller co-operation between the stute department o f Americanization and that o f Multnomah county, promoting the work as a joint enterprise to the advantage of Americanization in gvi: eral.” “ To co-operate and standard ze the department o f Americanization in the state is the purpose o f ho s bill 375,” said Representative Adan A. B>non. of Portland, author of the kiU. Beginning that same date will be the big Columbia Basin Wheal conference at Arlington, embracing 11 counties. Two groups, holding sessions Feb ruary 11-13, will be the annual con vention o f Oregon Retail Merchants' Association, and the anunal lecturers’ school for the granges of the state. This will be the- third consecutive an nual meeting on this campus for each of these groups. “ Credits and Collections” will be the theme o f this year’s educational program for the Retail Merchants which is based upon studies made by members of the commerce school fac ulty for Oregon merchants. Other phases of business will a.so receive at tention. The school for grunge lecturers, which has been well attended in fo r mer years, is sponsored jointly by Mrs. Minnie Bond, state lecturer, and the extension service o f the college. Another short course and confer ence, beginning February 11, will be for farmers, implement dealers, me chanics and others interested in power farming. The course will be under the direction o f the agricul tural engineering department o f the college, and will continue until Feb ruary 23. Those attending will have an opportunity of studying under out standing specialists in this field, in cluding the director of a famous power farming train. Beginning February 18 will be a five-day session for the rural electric service men of the state who will be here for the second time under the supervision of the experiment station and the Oregon committee on the re lation of electricity to agriculture. The purpose is to acquaint represen tatives o f electric companies and oth ers with present trends in the use of electric power on the farm. From a farm managemnt stand point the general farmer in Oregon cannot afford to take time to produce baby chicks from a common flock of hens, believes the experiment sta tion. Hatcheries specialize in high producing stock, while the farmer specializes in his general farm work. In addition to the foregoing facili ties, the Chevrolet Motor Company maintains an export plant at Bloom field, N. J., where Chevrolet motors, transmisions, etc., are packed for shipment to all quarters of the world. It is interesting in this connection to note that this tremendous produc tion requires the greatest degree of accuracy and care in precision manu facturing methods. The company finds this procedure not only advisable but necesasry in view of the possible waste of thou sands o f dollars in loss o f time through the holding up of an assem bly line for instance because o f a de fective part or careless workmanship. Precision, according to Chevrolet manufacturing experts, is the father o f speed. FARM REMINDERS In spite o f the fact that wintry con ditions have been prevailing in Ore gon, says the experiment station, veg etable growers are not unmindful of the fact that March usually brings j some good weather sufficiently warm to warrant transplanting of early cab bage and lettuce to the ground. Therefore plants are now being grown o f these vegetables with a view to having them ready to set out just as soon as weather and soil con ditions permit. Plants o f each vege table will stand light frost.
