But there is one particular place where all of these things should be forgotten and that is where the welfare o f “ our community’ is concerned. This naturally calls for team work and team work can never be successful unless everyone agrees to do his or her part in the pulling. Estacada is fortunate in hav ing an organization, the Eastern Clackamas Community Cl u b , whose chief aim should be to unite all for the general advance ment of eastern Clackamas coun ty. It is possible through such an organization to make known to the entire country the resources, possibilities and future of this, our home, causing all to forget themselves in the interests of a greater project, that of making Estacada grow. starring HOOT GIBSON The cowboy turns baseball player. Mr. Weisendanger of the Ea gle Creek National Forest Ser vice, gave the high school an interesting talk on fire preven tion last Thursday. After his talk he played several pieces on the harmonica. He also spoke to the grade school students and complimented both schools on their orderly fire drills. The girls of E. H. S. are plan ning a rest room in the high school building. This is to be in the old mechanical drawing room and will be fixed up and arran ged to suit the girls. Any arti cle of furniture such as chairs, rag rugs, table, small pictures and other things that will make the room more homelike, will be gladly accepted by the girls. This room is to be used exclusive ly by the girls and women teach ers. A reception was given the freshmen Friday evening, Oct. 10, by the sophomores, juniors and seniors. It was held in the high school building. About one hundred students attended. The frosh were given green ribbons to wear during the evening. A f ter an interesting program eon- sisting of stunts by the frosh the assembly adjourned to the cook ing room where cake and ice cream were served. Football News Another scrimmage game was held last Friday, which showed that the boys still need training. Although they have lost each game they are learning slowly. The first game of the season will be played here Oct. ‘J4, Scap- poose vs. Gresham. Gresham lost its first game of the season with Scappoose, due to the lack of practice. However, they will probably be hard to beat next week because of their strong team. Freshman Notes: The upper classmen gave the freshies a very pleasant reception Friday night. It was much enjoyed by all who were there. They met at 8 o ’clock and began by initia ting the freshmen. Those who performed the stunts *received booby prizes. After the amuse ments were over we were served ice cream and cake. Tuesday the 14, a student body meeting was held and a motion was made and seconded that the freshmen walk across the stage one by one and make a bow, which was done in such a spirit that it showed the freshmen were good sports. Last week there were several absent on account of sickness. Contrast of Cost of Chevrolet Cars In 1913 and Present Time What motor cars cost in 1913 as contrasied with their cost to day, demonstrates a striking proof of the economies wrought in automobile manufacture and distribution. Nearly every make of car that was sold in 1913 and is sold today cost considerably more ¡n the pre-war period. Statistics of the Chevrolet Mo tor Company have shown that taking a group of cars in the $1500 class and a representative group of cars in the less than $1,000 class, the price decrease since 1913 has been almost 50 percent, while the price differen tial for all commodities as shown bv government figures is a 45 percent increase over 1913. In spite of the fact that the price of automobiles is less today the product itself has been vast ly, improved. Today cars are more beautiful, more comforta ble, more mechanically perfect and more dependable. Sure and Certain Returns T he matter of freight rates enters very largefy into the overhead of most every business and in connction with agriculture, it has always been a large factor in deter mining its profit and loss. T he way to insure sure and cer tain returns for the farmer is to ship his product in con centrated form. That is why we, here at the ESTACADA S'^ATE BANK, have always advocated diversified farming, with dairy cows, chickens and hogs, fed and kept bv the hay and grain raised on the farm. In this way, concentrates of alfalfa and wheat or oats, such as butter milk, cream, eggs and pork can be marketed instead of the bulkier crops. What do you think of this plan Mr. Farmer? Come in and give us your views, end perhaps we can help you put your farm on a more profitable basis. We should like every farmer in ibis community to spend a few days at the Pacific International Livestock Exposition at Portland, Nov. 1st to 8th. Here will be assembled the greatest gathering of purebred beef and dairy cattle, hogs, sheep goats ard chickens in the entire country. It will afford you an opportunity for observing and studying the methods and results of successful breeders.
