Thursday, June 2, 1921 EASTERN CLACKAMAS NEWS Page Four _S______ M. _J . . t . Next Tuesday is election day. There are five measures upon which to vote, and as no nega tive argument has been publish ed against any of them, in the pamphlet issued by the Secretary of State, there is probably no ser ious opposition to them. The only one which seems to us ill advised, is the Hygenic Marriage Examin ation and License Bill. This is good in theory, but the bill has been poorly drawn up and is not likely to serve the purpose for which it is intended. Its practi cal effect may prove far from beneficial. June 2, 1921 Women Jurors An esteemed correspondent sends us a communication in ad vocacy of the law allowing wo men to serve as jurors, which will be voted upon at the coming election. We are entirely in fa vor of it. Ixrng before woman suffrage passed, we conceded tf e justice of the demand by women for the right to vote. And if a woman votes, she should be eli gible for all the responsibilities entailed by that right, among which is jury duty. She has al ready in some cities, assumed po lice duty, and we are in favor of extending this to military du ty of that sort for which she is physically qualified. In other words, as far as practicable, wo men should be on an absolute equality with men. We view with perfect equanimity, the possibility of a woman president of the U. S., especially as in early life we were subject to Queen Victoria of venerated memory. Governor Oleott was asked by the editor of the Wheeler Re porter, to set apart a week as “ Subicribe-for-your-local-n e w s- paper” week. The governor re plied that he thought every week should thus be designated. We commend this eminent opinion to those in this vicinity, who do not subscribe for their local paper, as well as those who are in ar rears. It is generally conceded by those who know best, that a paper is essential to the we’ fare of any community. It costs the publisher money to produce and as a rule he cannot carry accounts indefinitely, though always will ing to accommodate. The observance of Memorial Day this year was almost world wide. In France, in England and in Australia, the American soldier and sailor dead were hon ored and their graves decovated. In St. Paul’ s cathedral, London, a bust of George Washiig.on ns as unveiled, and a message from President Harding read. Vote for the World War V et erans’ State Aid Fund.
