Thursday, May 13, '920 Concerning Candidates Below we give a few running notes concerning some of the candidates whose advertisements appear in this issue: Chris Schuebel advertises his candidacy for state senator in this issue, and gives cogent rea sons for his being nominated. The Oregon Voter who is not friendly to him, however admits his ability, as being so “ soable in his expositions and so effective in his methods that much of his legislation is adopted by every session o f which he is a member. This includes some of the best modern legislation on the statute books, especially the workmen’s compensation law and its amend ments, chiefly the product of his w ork.” Philip Hammond, republican candidate for representative is the only service man of the eight who are running for this nomi nation. As he has long been a resident o f the county and popu lar, he stands a good chance of being one o f the three to be chosen. Harvey E Cross, candidate for County Judge, is well known to our people. He was representa tive in the last legislature when he “ made one o f the biggest hits o f the session by his celebrated apology for his colleague, Chris Schuebel,” writes the Oregon Voter, which adds that he is ‘ ‘universally respected by col leagues as a man o f character and ability.” L. L. Porter, o f West Lynn, is another old resident and former state senator, who is contesting for the county judgeship. He probably has as good a prospect as any for getting it. 0 . A. Pace, republican candi date for coroner, is well and favorably known. He is a school director o f Oregon City, and in his profession as funeral director, o f the firm Holman & Pace, he is most kind and considerate. His business reputation will win him many votes from those who be long to other parties than that of the republican. Thos. F. Ryan, Deputy State Treasurer for eight years, knows what the State needs in the way o f laws to protect the finances o f the State. He knows all the ropes at the State House and above all, Mr. Ryan has always been an honest, upright and conscientious public official with the interests o f the men and women o f the State at heart. With a slogan o f ‘ ‘One Hun dred per cent Americanism and the prosperity o f every woman, child and man in the State of Oregon,” W. R. McDonald, prom- EASTERN CLACKAMAS NEWS has announced his candidacy for joint representative in the state legislature from Clackamas and Multnomah counties. His platform is as follows: ‘ ‘I favor such legislation as will protect our country, preserve law and order, and will enable men and women to enjoy the prosper ity that is bound to come from the healthy development o f .Ore gon .” ‘ ‘For outspoken League o f Na tions man like Taft, Hoover or Hughes.” That is the slogan o f Edward A. MacLean o f Clackamas County, who seeks election in the prima ries on May 21 as a delegate at large to the Republican National Convention in Chicago. There are fifteen candidates for delegate at large to the Repub lican convention — f o u r to be elected—and o f these fifteen can didates only t h r e e announce where they stand on the League o f Nations issue.
