There is no royal road to learning, and while some may absorb know ledge more readily than others, none are exempted from strenu ous effort to make that know ledge their own. That means the pupil must apply himself to the task of learning, concentra ting his attention oh what he studies. Only in this way, will he be able to master his lesson and retain it. A superficial stu dent, while he may make a tem porary showing, soon loses what little he has acquired. A slow but painstaking pupil will in the long run, out distance one who though naturally quicker and brighter, yet is too indolent to apply himself. In a recent number of the Youth’s Companion, there is an excellent story, illustrating the etl'eet of diligent studiousness and being thorough in mastering the elementary principles. It shows how a girl not naturally musical, by sheer, patient, plodding and conscientious practice, developed a very creditable musical efficien cy. And history is full of exam ples of a brilliant finish from a discouraging start, through sheer perseverance and unremitting toil. For in these matters the race is not to the swift but to the . stedfast. A pupil in order to do justice to himself, his teachers and the educational advantages atforded him, must make study his chief aim. This will involve self sac rifice. No pupil can make pro gress in school, if most, if not all his evenings are passed in amuse ment. Parents have blamed the teachers because their children have failed to pass in the exami nations. But investigation re vealed that they had allowed the children to go to the theater, parties and other social diver sions. almost every evening of i the week. Learning is a jealous mistress and brooks no rivalry in her pursuit. She promptly re jects those who do not seek her with their whole hearts. We Could Start Our Ad. The American Legion Portland not only entertained the President this week, but also another distinguished visi tor, Col. Theodore Roosevelt Jr., who is on a tour in connection with the «organization of the American Legion, which is com posed of those who were in the service during the late war. It will be in the future what the G. A. R. has been in the past. It has already made a good be ginning in looking out after the interests of the returned soldier and sailor, in securing them em ployment, also in routing out German propogamla and the alien slacker. While we are not of President Wilson’s political following, yet we arq one with him on the League of Nations, and believe that for his efforts on its behalf, he deserves well, not only of his countrymen, but of the whole civilized -world. As we see the situation, it is either a league of nations or we must maintain an immense standing army and navy for self protection. The Portland Telegram damns the president’s address with faint praise, and in the same is sue lauds Senator Johnson for his courage in attacking the league. Is this significant? The State Fair at Salem, opens on Monday and lasts through the week. Odd Fellows: Building FALL GOODS Have arrived. Come in and visit our store and see what we have.
