Eastern Clackamas News Published every Thursday at Kstacada. Oregon K. M. Standitth, Editor and Manager Entered at the poitoffice in Kstacada, Oregon, as second-class mail. S u b sc r ipt io n One year - Six months *. - K atks - • • $1.00 .50 Thursday, July 12, 1917 Clackamas County’s indebted ness today is $10,409.39 accord ing to the semi-annual report of the County Clerk, made public last week. This shows a reduc tion of $91,890.80 since Decem ber 31st last. Such a reduction is but natural at this time of year, after the taxes have been collected, but it will be recalled that this happy condition of affairs is never men tioned about the time when Cascade County is in vogue, with the county seat fathers constant ly w a r n i n g the divisionists against the staggering share of the county’s indebtedness they will have to carry, if they form a county of their own. Probably due to the approach ing harvest days on the farms and to the call of the cool coun try roads for the autoists, the reservations made for last Mon day evening’s dinner meeting of the Farmers’ & Merchants Club were way below normal. This commercial organization must not be allowed to wither, dry-up and blow away, for the maintenance of such a club is an absolute necessity in this com munity. but its maintenance is entirely dependent upon the ac tive support of the business men of Kstacada and tlie farmers of this district. The continuance of the work of such an organization means ac tual dollars and cents to every one of us. If no other result had been forthcoming but the estab lishment of the Kstacada Cheese factory, the benefits of the past year’s cooperation would not be hard to see. Just as surely as the sun rises and sets, benefits of importance to every resident of ibis section will come from working together in the Farmers’ & Merchants’ Club and all are urged to make a special effort to attend the next and all subsequent meetings. It is not only your duty, but it means prosperity for you and your families. The News bas occasion, in the course of its weekly work of ob taining the advertising copy from the local advertisers, to come in close touch with the respective cos» and selling prices of the sta ple goods sold in this community. Contrary lo the belief held by many, the profit accruing to the retailer in this district ami espec ially in this day of high cost of living and economical merchan dizing, is a narrow one and in order to meet competition, the strictest of economies and the ut most care in buying is necessary on the part of the Kstacada mer chant. The editor was surprised to discover that a large proportion of the staple groceries sold in Ks tacada, were at a price equal to or even below the retail mail-or der quotations in Portland. And furthermore, the Kstacada mer chant is paying freight from Portland and incidentally selling much of his stuck on charge ac counts, where the Portland mail order house insists on cash in advance. If it were not for ninety-nine other reasons why the local peo ple should patronize the local merchant, the chance to save money alone, should be sufficient inducement. Few of us realize that the av erage Kstacada grocer, who is selling baker’s bread, pays 95c to the baker for every dollar’s worth sold. Of course, bread is only handled as a leader, but the item of profit on many other staples is nearly as small. Right here the News wish es to contradict a harmful story which gained credence in this community last week, to the ef fect that the business men of Kstacada were behind the pro posed, but later cancelled, July 4th military tournament and cel ebration to have been held in Kstacada. Whether this story was circu lated with intent to hurt the lo cal business men or not, it had that effect to some extent—al though it is more than likely the origin of the story was a ques tion asked at that time, namely:- "Are the Kstacada merchants be hind the Kstacada celebration” ? In explanation, let it be under stood that such celebration as was scheduled by the soldiers of Company I), was planned and conducted entirely by them and until July 3rd. no one in Kstaca da knew of the proposed affair. Primarily the soldiers were giv ing the celebration with its at tendant attractions, for the en tertainment of their relatives and friends from Portland and elsewhere, also for their own en- teitainment, and naturally an in vitation was extended to the peo ple of this community to join in the good time. ' The retailing of a story of this sort is not fair to the Kstacada business men and should not have been believed by any of our rural neighbors, all of whom must know that the merchants of Kstacada always have and al ways w ill work to establish and maintain the closest of business *# W e Strive To Please pi Our prices are kept as low as can be made and our service the best we know how to give. it i i % We can get cheaper merchan dise but we do not believe in sacrificing quality for quantity but try to live up to our motto !:! This makes two and three- fourths miles of paved highway in the county, but none of same lies in or near Eastern Clacka mas County. Eastern Clackamas is paying between one fifth and one s’ixth of the county’s taxes and should todate have one fifth or one sixth of 2H miles of paved highway— but for 9ome reason it hasn’t.
