Eastern Clackamas News E. H. S. Echoes Published every Thursday at Estacada. Oregon Contributed Two games of basket ball were played with Sandy High School, Friday evening January 5th, The E. H. S. girls met with defeat, the score being 12 to 14. In the boys game, however, the home team was more fortunate and de feated the visitors 18 to 11. In as much as this was our first ap pearance, and very little practice had been held, the victory was a surprise to Coach Baker and the players. Next Saturday return games will be played at Sandy. The first interscholastic debate will be held Jan. 12th. The affir mative team will debate Milwau- kie here, while the negative will go to Hillsboro. Ida and Otis Wagner, who have been absent since the holidays, due to an attack of La Grippe, re appeared in the assembly Monday morning. The regular Student Body meeting was held last Friday, for the purpose of electing new offi cers for the next semester. The new officers are; President, John Schenk; Vice President, Joe De moy; Secretary, Carrie Hannah; Treasurer, Emma Barr; and Ser geant of arms, Wm. Bartlemay. Miss Schrepel gave an interest ing and instructive account of her visit to the Oregon Agricultural College Monday. Some may wish to know why they have heard no Echoes from the high school the past two weeks; therefore the correspon dents wish to remind them that vacation is just over, therefore there were no Echoes to hear. S ubscription R ates One year Six months . - . . - - $1.00 .50 Thursday, January 11, 1917 The following letter from Coun ty Judge H. S. Anderson is in answer to an inquiry which was made by several local taxpayers and voiced recently through the columns of the News:- Oregon, City Oregon, Dec. 28th, 1916 Mr. R. M. Standish Estacada Dear Sir—In the last issue of your paper I notice you ask “ What becomes of the $20,800 receipts from the different offices of the County” . By referring to the budget sheet you will observe that the total estimated expense is $545,213.40 which is the amount of money necessary to pay all expenses. The $20,300 is also an estimate of the amount that will be paid into the county treasury from fees, etc. This latter amount is taken from the whole estim ate and the levy is computed from the net amount. Unless this was done you can readily see that nearly 1 mill more would be necessary to raise the whole amount In other words every bodies tax would be nearly 1 mill higher without the re ceipts figured off. As to who gets it— The taxpayers get it. H. S. Anderson The J udge seems to have clearly stated the answer and we wish to thank him for his courtesy in the matter.
