So fa r as known, no foreign resident lost his life. The governor of Hunan province. Wu Tchung Siu, and his son, were killed, and several other government officials fled. E ven y et a section of the city is in flames. Six thousand foreign drilled Boldiers are stationed here and a few of these protected the governor’s house for a tim e, but soon all joined the rio ters. The rio ts began A pril 13, when the (am ine sufferer s looted the rice de pots. A cap tain of police was wound ed try in g to restore order. Thous ands crowded around him and his as sistan ts, and he was obliged to flee to the yam en. The rio te rs followed and besieged the place all night. The follow ing day the disturbance became anti-foreign. The Chinese In land mission and the Norw egian and Catholic m issions were burned. The other m issions were destroyed April 15. The m issionaries attached to the Am erican Episcopal M issionary al liance, the U nited E vangelical church and the W esleyan and Yale scientists, num bering 41 in all, took refuge in boats. They le ft all th e ir effects. The destruction of all foreign prop erty, including the Japanese consulate and the B ritish w arehouses, followed. The fa te of the Standard Oil com pany’s new ly-erected tanks is unknown. The rio te rs num bered no few er than 24,000. E ig h t G erm ans attached to the Lieb- enzoll m ission w ere in town when the trouble began, and they fled the city to Hankow in a junk w ithout lights. I t is used by physicians with results most gratifying. The extended use of Castoria Í3 unquestionably tho result of three facts: first—Tho indisputable evidenco th a t it is harmless: Stcond T hat it not only allays stomach pains and quiets tho nerves, hut assimi lates the food: Third—I t is an agreeable and perfect substitute for Castor Oil. I t is absolutely safe. I t does not contain any Opium, Morphine, or other narcotio and does not stupefy. I t is unlike Soothing Syrups, Bateman’s Drops, Godfrey’s Cordial, etc. This is a good deal for a Medical Journal to say. Our duty, how- evor, is to exposo danger and record tho means of advancing health. The day for poisoning innocent children through greed or ignorance ought to end. To our knowledge, Castoria is a remedy which produces composure and health, by regulating the system—not by stupefying it—and our readers aro entitled to the information.—H all's Journal o f H ealth.
