It is a misnomer to apply the word “ republican” to any party in Oregon. Down in Clatsop county, the home of Senator Fulton, the lat ter was given an overwhelming ma jority at the primaries. But the same people turn Cake down heav ilv, and vote for Chamberlain. It is clear that personalities predomin Miss Nellie Johnson who has ate the politics of the state as well as everything else. Socialism, and the principles for which the socialists stand, were de fended by “ Buzz’ ’ Thomas in Odd fellow hall last Thursday evening, in a very entertaining speech. Mr Thomas told a great many truths, and some things we can not agree with him ou. A 1 Lindsey measured the depth of the Clackamas river under the high bridge, and found it only a trifle more than 23 feet deep. This does away with the old theory that the river at that place is bottom less. Many years ago, the story goes, a rancher was driving a heard of cattle across the old bridge here, and it gave 'way and precipitated the whole outfit into the water. Nothing was ever heard of them a- gain for months, until a report come from China saying that a drove of Oregon cattle had come out of a hole in the earth a short distance back of Pekin President Geo. Estes of the Esta cada State Bank is receiving esti mates of the cost of having the Es tacada State Bank building repaper- e l and repainted. The woodwork in the banking room is to be refill- ished also. The cost of the pro posed improvement will be about 5250. The up stairs of the build ing will tic changed- into handsome office suites. A ftirprise party took place at the home of M:\ and Mrs. H. V. Doe Tuesday evening. Quite a nmnbtr of the young people about town gathered there and had a very pleasant time with games, music &c. The party was given in honor of Miss Carrie Doe cf Salem who is here 011 a visit. T. J. Reagan has added a nice picket fence to his many improve ments ou his ranch. Webster & Davis’ saw mill closed down for one day only last week as the men all wanted to go fishing The gang walked to the North Fork and back the same day. The larg est man caught the smallest fish numbering four iu all. Some of the fishermen had good luck. Will gets a nice rose for his walk three times a week. Last Thursday, May 28, was the seventh wedding anniversary of Mr and Mrs N. L. S. Lourryy. A musical entertainment in the ladies' parlor of the hotel was in honor of the occasion and at 10:30 the guests were invited to the gaily attired dinning room where a sumptious dinner was served; all wishing them many more happy anniversaries.
