Chits. Van Duyn was a Portland viiitor the past week. Geo. Woodruff was a business caller in Maupin Monday. C. W. Wing is visiting at The Dal.es and Portland this week. F. M. Driver of Wamic was a business caller here Wednesday. The Punch & Judy show given here Tuesday evening whs attend ed by a goodly crowd and well en joyed. A few stayed to partici pate in the dance after the show. Judge Harper and Dr. Shannon were Maupin callers Tuesday. J. W. Davidson, M- M. Morris and K G. Weisbeck were county seat visitors Monday and Tuesday Several of the boys were called in for examination from hue the past week. Dad Cole, the Maupin hide buy er, was transacting business here on Monday. 1 The play given here Saturday evening by the Maupin Ili;h Echool was patronized by a large audience. The parts were well played and everyone enjoyed it and pronounced it the 'best yet'. Waisic News Fell. 4. J. D. Kennedy and Percy Driv er returned Tuesday from a busi ness trip to The Dalles. V. H( Johnson killed a stray dog which he thought had rabies it his place Wednesday. Frank and Wilbur Wing and Chester Prittain were Dilles busi ness visitors Tuesday. Fiort McClure and A. I'.rown vvi're here from Maupin Tuesday, remaining over niht, at Hie Siviit house. Mr. ' Krown was taking orders for photos taken of this place last fall. This place had a sudden drop in the temperature when zero was reached Tuesday night with only four degrees wanner the following night. This is the coldest weather expeiienced this winter. Some snow fell but scon melted away. Ed' and Willis Driver were Dalles visitors Wednesday and Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. J. 'E. Woodcock visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. II. Woodcock at Maupin Euesday, lenuiining over night. They returned to the Bruce Driver place and stayed over night there Wednesday. - Mr. and Mrs, Charley Grabtree arrived Wednesday from Antelope where they spent the wiifer. A dinner will be served the tfue'ts and a program rendered in the afternoon. Revs. Kails and Sauitile are holding a series of meetings on Smock, beginning two weeks ago. Several persons were baptized a week ago Sunday. A basket din ner was hetd at the Smock school house yesterday where all day services were held. The "Knitters spent Saturday afternoon with, Mrs. Josie Lake. Mrs. Lake suggested the organiz ing of a Red Cross branch here. M uiy persons went from here to Tygh 'Saturday night to attend the Maupin play. Among those who went were Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Swift, Little Wanda Swift, Mr. and Mrs. Charley Crahtree, F. A. Swift, Dave Crahtree, Yeonie Nor Vel, Miss M. K. Compton, Housty Johnson and Miss Ida Duncan, While returning' from the play and dance at Tygh Saturday night Housty Johnson had some difficul ty in reaching the top of the Tygh grade with, his car and Henry Miller was summoned to bring the party home. Mr. and Mrs. Charley Crahtree went to Juniper Sunday. They have employment at the J. A. Davidson" home. F. A, Swift and Davo Crahtree rought a . load of freight from Sherar the latter part of the week for the Lake store. Eleven men were graveling some very miry places in the road south of town Friday. A, M. Patison furnished the gravel from his land adjoining the road. Mr. and Mrs. J. A;- Davidson were guests at the A. J. Swift home Sunday. very spring use vveauier lias billowed the recent freezup here. A squirrel was seen yesterday which apparently indicates the advent of an early spring.' A. J. Swift haB a flock of small birds that hover in a vine w hich envelopes the roof of his front porch. This is the fifth winter he has fed the birds who find that an ideal winleiing place, Mrs.- Annie Remington returned a week ago Sunday lrom Juniper Flat.. An error was made in last week's Times'. It, was Mrs. Carl Pratt who received the letter from her husband who is in France. Ho reached Kngland on Christinas day and was transferred to France reaching there New Year's day, Geo'. Mugill went to The Dalles today to serve on the grand jury. Seven sweaters and nine pairs of socls were sent from here last week and eight more sweaters and fourteen pairs of socks will be 'sent tomorrow to the P"d Cross society. from Kansas Saturday. She has lived here for several years, but Had been there for over a year visiting relatives. She will make her home with tier mother, Mrs. tl. N. Dodge. 'Mr. and Mrs. Jackson Rice were made happy last week by two let ters from their son Arthur from "Somewhere Over there". lie says they had a fine trip across the waters and he is well and en joying army life. Mr. and Mrs. Grover Webb and Carl Head made a business trip to The Dalles Monday, returning Tuesday. Mrs. Laferty came out from The Dalles Tuesday to visit, her sister, Mrs. Hess and mother, Mrs. Milstead. Frank Buzan and family are now at home in their cozy little bungalow, which is yery neat and convenient.
