E. society here held a patriotic service Sunday night and unfolded a service flag made of red and with the number of the boys from here who are in-service in the army. There are thirteen. Each was represented by a star, and one star had a circle of gold around it, representing Ernest; Paquet who is dead, Kellie Hol land is chairman of the TVar Ser vice committe and had chargn of the meeting. Virgil May field has been employed by Sam Brown ' for a considerable length of time and it is stated that after a brief visit to relatives and friends at Wamic he '- will again take up his duties .on Ihe Brawn ranches. A pre-nuptial reception was given to the yoilng couple at Mrs. lilanelie Hedin's home Monday evening hifor.e they left, A neigh borhood gathering gave th.em best wishes and expressed the desire to see them enjoy a iong h'appy union Dr. Elwood Called Dr. Elwood received his orders last Saturday morning to appear at his post for military duty and left Sunday morning. A farewell meeting was held in Sbattuck's hall last Saturday ev ening when nil Maupin came to bid farewell to Dr. Elwood and with him God speed as ho starts on his way to jein the forces at tho front somewhere in France. Flat and in regards to changing the grade on upper half of the Maupin ., hill grade. Road muster ' Shaip and Flighway Engineer Ellktt were also interviewed. The com mittee obtained Ihe promise of P200 for use on the Upper Flat road, provided the farmers showed a desire to co-oporato and volunteer- some work to go with the spending of the money. This vol unteer work is assured. Tie county commissioners also prom ised the committee that the district shall have $5000 to be used in changing the grade providing it i9 found by the Engineers Sharp and :. Elliott that a 5, per cent grade is possible. In any case the $5000 has been guaranteed and improve ment to that amount or more will . be available soon, Tne large pe tition will be circulated by tbe representatives of Wapinitia and Maupin, and it is now urged that all men and women, freeholders support this work and sign the. petition in order that a solid front be presented to the commissioners so they may see that tbe Plains people are vitally of one mind jn favor of this practical and bene ficial improvement. Let's forget our personal motives and pull for the greatest good to ihe whole district. Some Well (Wapinitia) Ora Maynard has had several men at work the past week in his big cistern which he is digging. They have been setting off some blast9 the past few days that cause one to think the Germans might be near. They now have it 25 deep and 20 feet in diameter. Ho expects to have it ready for, tint cement in a few days and wil fill it from the creek to irrigate a garden next summer.
