Stirring Story of the Klomlykc Region Is Adapted Vrom tlm Novel From tlie I'cn of Hex Uracil- IX, - - t iH 1 . ja Scene from 'The Barrier" Which Opens the HeiUg Calendar. Itoplete with thrills, beautiful iphotoirrapliy and splendid acting by 'a .tioiable cast ot principals. "The Barrier." Rex neach's epic or the .thrilling; Klondike region conies .to the Ileitis Monday for ti bin three day run. i , ' Heach's stirring novel "of the" 'Alaskan frontier, where the veneer of civilization dropped from men throuprh their lust for irald has been . transferred to the screen with praiseworthy fidelity by Director Ceorjre Hill. The cast Includes such notables as Norman Kerry. TJonel llarrymore. Henry B. Walthall. .Slarcellne Day. Pat Harmon. Bc.-t 'Woodworth and others. So well do these players acquit themselves that they ably deserve the title of the season's best cast. ' The picture is packed with high power dramatic thrills. The rescue of the pirl from the whalins ship jammed la the ice-floes, the wreck OT the ship in the "ice. the furious battle between the younp; lieutenant and Bennett In the ship's cabin, the jrtrotnrle between the first mate, "essayed by Pat Herman, and Bur ell's orderly. Sersreant Murphy, combine to keep .the spectator on the edge of his seat throughout the film. In "The Barrier" the beautiful country of the Klondyke is por trayed in the minutest detail: the hardships of the men who rushed north for gold is there: the love of the Wit man for his woman; and of other scenes are pictured. "Sun-t'p. a vivid Illustration ot what new brains and fresh Imagina tion can do in giving lire blood to. what is after all but a shadow, and In giving sympathy to characters that are hardly understandable to the majority is coming to the Heilig Friday and Saturday of this week, - ' The story .Is centered about a group of mountaineers, living in poverty and ignorance in western North Carolina. Their only in terpretation of law and order is based on the word "revenoors," and the hate of them has been inherit ed for generations. a How they come to an under standing of their rights and the real meaning of law through the efforts ot a man who broke away from the community to join the marines, and who comes back with a new conception of hie birthright and ideas which he tries to foist upoa the incredible and unwilling com munity, is the basis of the intense drama of the production. In the part of this boy. Conrad Nagel. long-known for his im maculate appearance, breaks away from the type of role he haa been portraying, and proves once again that he Is one of Uie screen's most versatile and finest actors. These may be all right for the gambling type of players but the ' writer prefers the soutjd, conventional bids, bids that really inform. There is ' np system of biddine that can. hold its own with a system that erves exact in formation at all times, mlormation that Teally informs. The bidding, if conven tional, should "mirror" one'9 hand to , tine's partner. It should "give uifdrma ' tJbn that will enable partner to act in telligently in his subsequent bidding. ' The goal of all bidding at auction is to . arrive at the best bid of the combined ' hands, that is the best Lid of twenty t six cards, not of thirteen. A player who ; Uses trick bids may .confuse his op ''pontnts occasionally but. in the long '; ru'n, he loses more by loss of faith of his . partner in the soundness of his bids. 1 than he can possibly; gain by his trick -; bidding. A partnership to be successful, either in business qr auctipn, must be .iqunaea on mutual trust ana conscience. For that reason, be reliable stall times. t Let your bids mean what you say. "'"Every advertised feature. sacred . pledge," is not only a good motto for - business men Dut also tor auction, play ers. Learn the conventional bids and stick to them. Be reliable, first, last and1 "all the time. ' ' . In the following hand,4 the tricky . bidder won out but his gam on that hand has more than been offset by loss -fol confidence of his partner. There's ' nothing in these trick bids in the long" .run so keep away front thein. The ex . ample is given more u a warning than - as a model to follow. . ' . ' . No score, rubber game. Z dealt and bid one no-trump, A bid two hearts, Y and B passed. Z now bid two no-trump A bid three diamonds, Y doubled and B passed. Z now bid three no-trump, A doubled, Y redoubled and B passed. If you were holding Z's cards, how would you size up the bidding and what would you dor : Y j :A B: Hearts-rA.Q, J Clubs 9, 7,4 Diamonds A, 9, 2 Spades A, Q, 4, 2 In the actual olav Z passed and A laid down seven set up club tricks and so set the contract by three tricks or 600 points.aA's trick bidding was successful in this instance but Y and Z should have been on the start. Z's mistake oc curred when heiailed to allow the three diamond double to stay in. If he had, A would have bid four clubs and if doub led would have lost three tricks or 300 points. Y made a serious error by re doubling A's double of three no-trump. He should have realized by then that A could not be doubling on diamonds or hearts. As be held four spades, A'a double must be based on the club suit. His redouble is very bad. With Z's hand, the writer would have bid four spades. It should have been apparent that A was doubling on the club suit and noth ing more. At spades, YZ cot'ld make four odd without trouble. T!.e hand of all four players are as follows!
