A wrist pin KnorK sounus mucn like a valve tap but will disappear when tho spark plug to this f'l Bra corrolntod with tho phm Automohll ...i.. iiii.tv in n. oumvaied '; A connoctltiff rod knock ia heard usually when, tho engine la Idling or decelerating and Ib a sharp, clear sound ns though tho crank shaft wero being struck with a hammer, whereas a loose main bearing la a dull thud frequently only heard when tho engine Is running with spark advanced and throttle wide open above twenty fivo or thirty miles per hour. H tho bearing knock develops very slowly, It may be Ignored for a time. Hut if It develops rapidly as when duo to lack of oil it is highly advisable to run the 'car no further, aa continued operation after tho knock becomes excessively loud, may reault In the poking of a connecting-rod through the crankease, the spring ing or breaking of the crankshaft, etc. When tho knock Is dua to sudden lack of oil it may only be a few seconds from the time the knock is first heard until the crankease or crankshaft are dam aged. Connecting-rod and main bear ings are usually adjustable, al though if very badly worn replace ment may be required, and if no provision for adjustment ,is made, replacement is required in any case. The first step is to locate the loose bearing. If a connecting rod, short circuit one spark, plug after another with engine idling until the knock disappears. If a main bearing, short circuit one plug after another, the knock be ing reduced by the spark plug or plugs closest to the bearing. To adjust a rod bearing, remove the oil pan and remove the bear ing cap on the offending rod, re move an equal number of shims from both sides of the rod or if shims are not provided file the face of the.bearing cap evenly on Dour siaes. 'men put ine cap back on. If rod can be moved hand, ft is too loose and if It can not be moved by tapping very lightly with a hammer it Is too tight. Add or subtract shims un til it can be moved by tapping very lightly with a hammer. If main hearings are to e ad justed at the same time, it is ad visable to adjust them before ad justing the rdds. Remove shims or file cap and put cap back. Con tinue this process until silent extra effort is required to crank engine (with all pet cocks open or all spark plugs removed). Then loosen this cap just a trifle and adjust the next cap. Loosen this cap a trifle and adjust the next and so on. All bearing caps should be flooded with oil before being re placed. Car should not be driven faster than twenty-five or thirty miles per hour until bearings are limbered up aa indicated by easy cranking. Copyright, 1295 Br International Feature Syndicate, Inc. Miller, who Is en prnBed In research work In tho de partment of agricultural engineer- , Ins of tho agricultural college 'of , the Alabama oolytochnin Institute, ', baa succeeded in workln out a, method for reclaiming or launder- . Ing old oil at a cost estimated by him at leas than five conts a gal- '. Ion. In studying tho problem. Dr. Miller found that oil doea not ; "wear out" by use In a crankease, and neither does it change itn ' comoosltion. Rome o-sen occur mechanically and by ox'dat'on. but ine on useir. remains suhstanHallv . tne same as It was before used. Tt la rendered unfit for service hy contamination with other "suh atoncea, such aa carbon and other solids, and certain constituents of gasoline. The removal of these subs'ancea is all that is reoulrcd 'or its suc cessful reclamation. This can be done by tiourlng the oil Into a tnnk, adding a wasbiner powder, b'owing steam throueh it for . about three hours, allowing It to settle, and then draw off the o'l from the top, leayincr the foreign substances, both solid and liquid, in tho bottom. When treated this - way tho ' Bteam is partly condensed, dissolv ing the washing powder, which has tho property of loading down the carbon and other solid oar- tleles In the oil with a film of tho solution, causing them to coagu-' late somewhat as caaeln coagulates In milk when it curdles. Th's causes the solid particles to settle to the bottom of the container, . forming a layer of sludge or muck between the oil and the solution.--Tho uncondensed portion' of the : . steam carries the gasoline away-; with it as vapor. - ... On tho efficiency of this method ' Dr. Miller says that four qunrts of oil aa it is drawn ordinarily from a crankease ohould return three quarts-of oil as good as-new; ' ' ' While the practical use of this discovery remains "to- be-.- -de--'-termlned Dr. Miller predicts that many garages and service stations , will take advantage of it., , ; TIs Tho Christinas t'nr the week beforo cnrisimas, Die eastern iV.rpnmM.m-.nl jy.n?
