Tiros wero three tnrhes wide and smooth of trend with something l:ko seventy pounds of nlr In them. XTpon striking a hole In the road the entire rear end of the car went into the air, sliding around In a Hair-raising skid when they touched earth again. The!r action reminded the onlooker ' that the car was without spring control devices. How the driver struggled with tho clutch. In order tu get any thing approximating a steady mo tion at low speeds he had to slip the clutch continually. Even then the whole business went off like a shot every now and again. ..i' He could not tell what was be hind him unless he turned his head clear around, for ' the yellow celluloid window light in the rear curtain was designed to afford him strict privacy! ' ' " There was a stone crusher under the hood. A trail' of smoke fol lowed in the wake of the car. The horn was a scream. ' The' head lights revealed every danger point on the tree tops.' Yet that car represented classy transportation Just eight- short years ago, - -, One Affects Uw Other Balloon tires, in splashing more water, have necessitated some im portant' changes In spring control devlcerf. : Motorists who are" hav ing trouble with their - original spring controls should have - the rust removed and the new protec tive features added. - - - Did Yon Know That If the liquid in -the inotometer becomes separated the instrument can be restored to usefulness again? Simply insert the lower portion of it in a pan of boiling water.' The bnlk of tho liquid in the meter will then rush- upward and meet tho portion that has be come separated. Upon 'cooling the meter will be as good as ever.- - If calcium chloride -is - used as an antl-freeze solution and- spills over the Ignition wires it will cause short-circuits? - These will be very difficult to locate since the calcium chlorld will melt when the engine warms up, malting it difficult to trace the short. Two horns cannot be operated from one six-volt battery If they are to operate in series from 'one . button. Connect them on separate circuits with separate "- buttons, however, and a double horning ef fect can be bad If both buttons are touched simultaneously. Tell by the Smell There is a way to tell whether the used car dealer has doped the gasoline with eiher when giving' a demonstration. Under pretext of wishng to hear how the gears sound in reverse the prospective purchaser should back up briskly. The 1 exhaust fumes that would otherwise' float off In the wake of the car then drlftlnto.it. If the gas has been doctored the emell will tell. The Old Mechanic Says ' One of the things most car owners can't seem to get through their heads is that most repair shops are not equipped to rebuild cars. There is a big difference between repairln' and rebuildln. This difference Is sometimes measured by the big bills owners pay for unsatisfactory rebulldin jobs. I'll give an Illustration that hap pens to be In my mind. John Smith down the way began to worry about the loose pistons In his motor. He could only hear them slappln' when he tried to heor them, but things were not right and Smith knew it. One day he came to me for an estimate on havin' the pistons re placed with new and oversized ones. I looked the situation over and told him tho whole Job would cost about a dollar and a half. That nearly took htm off his feet. I explained that about nil ho needed was six quarts of Heavy oil and a determination to forget his trouble for at least another ten thousand miles. But- of course, that didn't satisfy him.- ' Ho wunted new pistons, and some mechanic was eager enough' for the work to make a comparatively low estimate for the Job and get the order.' ' . , That WU3 a month or so ago, Smith now hurt a complete new set of pistons, but he's' got a new slap ono that seems to lie even more serious than the first one. All that mechanic tlld-was- to-order tiny oversize pistons he could get, regardless of whether they fitted. Out at tho factory they make a selection from a stock of pistons and make sure they all balance ami are of exactly the same size, Tho owner I'm still speakln' of Smith was also surprised to nnq that the car cats up more gas now ihnt the new n Intone ore in. nut that was because he didn't figure tho cylinders would have to be roborcd, thus mnkln' them larger, ft would havo been cheaper for him In many ways to navo taken my advice. " night off tho Hood Seven towns In Illinois objected to having the stnte run trunk high ways through them ths year. Js'o tin-can tourist and ' trans' contlnental speeders for these folk. ' A new six has taken tho place of -a famous four. A new straight oiglit Supplements a bigger straight eight. A new six is out icll.ng a V-elght that was unlqiio t us kind. A lighter six together With a current ix will call for .ho demise of another famous V elt;ht. A manufacturer ' of sixes is cleaning up with a new four; How restless these manufacturers be. Three Soitrwa of Carbon - Carbon originates in three dif ferent way. So much has been said on the subject or late that car owners are tempted to believe that any one of the threo is the biggest lactor, depondlng largely ' upon what what sort of advertising literature has been read. Carbon comes most naturally to an automobile engine through' the combustion of the fuel. Tho bet ter the combustion the less residue ash : or carbon, whatover one chooses to cull it, will remain In the engine. The decomposition and burning of lubricating? oil that leaks past iae pis.on rings into the cylinders is a second source of carbon. A third source Is the dirt that enters the engine through the car buretor." Wh.ch source of carbon Is the more pronounced 'depends largely upon conditions. No two cars will carbonize exactly alike.' ' ' Do Preliminaries First In giving the engine a few turns wl.h the hand crank each morning as a means of limbering up a stiff motor and filling up the cylinders with gas spray jt sometimes hap pens that the owner will forget h.mself and switch on the ignition before giving the battery a lift. Tli.s is risky. Careful owners make it a rule not to unlock the ignition until they have gone through the prel.ni.noriea. Now You Have It (Answers to lost week's questions) 1 Eighty horsepower is re quired to overcomo wind resist ance If a car with 10 square feet of head surface is traveling 100 miles an hour. - 2 The first official auto road race in America was held on Lang Inland, April 14, 1900, between Springfield and Babylon. 3 If a spring bolt Is not prop erly greased it will squeak. That Is ihe one sure test. 4 A car can be stopped quicker by using the emergency brake In connection with the servico brake, provided the ' wheels are not locked. If the wheels lock the added effort is of no avail. i 5 In order to keep a radiator from freezing down to 18 degrees below zero it is necessary to use a 50 per Cent solution, of alcohol. According to the report received by the Durant Motor company of California, the time made by the Star was 25 mlnuies 49 2-5 seconds for the nine1 and a half miles up the famous grade to the summit. This cKnib s held under the atr.ct rules of the A. A. A; and only their figures are official.. The best previous official time ' on record established In 1918 by a- higher priced "four was in i excess of 38 minutes. Before the climb started news- j paper men of Los Angeles and of-' ficials of the A. A; A. checked the competing cars lor biock leatures In order to be sure that every driver had fulfilled requirements of the run. Bill Weeks of the Durant Motor company drove the Star , touring car that set the new four cylinder record, and was highly praised by officials of the run as well as his associates for the remarkable way he handled the car. Each year, thia climb attracts unlimited attenton throughout the entire southern section of the-state because of its many hazards and tortuous curver. Ordinarily only men who have had a great deal' of experience driving this road at tempt this climb' but Weeks had only driven the road twice before entering this run, and the way be handled the Star was nothing short of atnasing. - JEWETT IN BIG DEMAND SMALLER STf ATKH RKPOUT ON ' VEAIVS BI-8IX1&S T t- Indications ,that the new .Tewett six and' PalitO Blx models aro in bl(r demand throUKhout the nation were Been by tho distribution do partment of the PnlRo-Dctrolt Motor Car company In early ro ports from somo of tho smaller automobile . purchasing states In the union which have Just re ported their registrations of new cars durlnsr January, 1926.
