RtatlHtlcH from three churchej! of different denomination In Eugene show u derided lgcrease In mem bership und attendance within the hint few years. Tho ministers of these three churches agree that there Is more religious feeling at the pronont time than there hnn been for a number of years. Xr, K. V. Hllvers of tho Flrt Christian church even says them la more religious feeling today than there ever has been In tho history of the worju. "More people read the Bible to day then ever before. When before have there been Iliblu chmses of men alone reaching Into the thou sundK?" asked Mr. Stivers. "The propagnndn suiting how few per sons go to church today Is ridiculous." "The growth of our local church hinges around our Hunday school, und it Is the panic with almost any church. A great Hunda? school meanN n great church. Before a man Is asked to preach In a cer tain church the question Is asked: 'J he a Runday school man?'" Sunday School fiiow "Emphusls upon the Sunday school hud been sadlv neglected until 1 came hero seven years ago. Toe aim of our first rally any Wuti 300 and 831 were present. The next 'year It was 1000, and 1213 were prcKcnt, A year ago tho atten dance reached 2308 on rally duy. In accordance with this remark able growth In the Sunday school the attendance of the church rose from 600 to 1600. "There arc not too many churches. Taking the local Bitua tlan as an example; thero Is room for every church In this town. Fill one church in a town under or dinary circumstances and you will fill them all. I think one of the saddeet things in the religious world Is the division, yet this division doe-not cause the growth of on to , retard that of another for the growth of one always accentuate a thut of another, "Our Hunday school has been so marked thut moving pictures of It with others of outstanding growth are being taken to bo shown all over tho country," Dr. Htiverg con cluded, Itev. Frank Fay Eddy of tho Unitarian church said that his work here has been satisfactory, but not spectacular. "Wo havo hud a 100 per cent Increase - lu attendance wince we came. Thirty per cent of our congregation are students; 75 per cent aro men. It Is tin more thoughtful students that comes to tw, and as men aro gen erally more Interested In thinking things out than women there Is the greuter percentage of men. Free Pulpit Iraw "A perfectly free pulpit and a freedom, of 'thinking throughout the church Is what draws our peo ple. I never attempt to control my conversation In any way, and I do not wish the congregation to do so. Wo are the only church In town that absolutely sponsors free dom of thought and speech. . "Worship of God and fellowship of men is our only pledge. We be lieve In the interpretation of re ligion In harmony with scientific thinking. We attempt to think straight and be rationalistic. No ono hus any more authority In the church than any ono else. The Unitarian church Is a brunch from the Congregational church here und from tho Presbyterian In Eng land. "Membership Is nltogethor vol untury. Wo never Indulge In drives. Many people who do not wish to belong to any church find thorn solves at home In this congrega tion." . itev. F. J. Clark of the First Con gregational church said: "People are just beginning to react and find they cannot live without religion. I feel there wa a doflntte slack in religion. After the war all Ideal' Ism was submerged. Every Insti tution of civilization has been changed for new ones. For ex ample, observe the changes in the family, In medicine. The reaction against ' morals and IdeaVi after' the war left the people exhausted. The people who had left the church and others, too, are coming to the church. . ; MemhcrshJp Drivd On , "This year has been one of mem bership driving for us. I came here to do special work In membership. We havo received . 101 . into th . church since January and are urt of 26 more this year. We aro aim., Ing at a loo per cent increase In r -membership, and we .will accom plish It. "This church has a definite, unl-; fled, religious outlook, and ohar actor. It Is the only ono In tho . city definitely liberal evangelical. We believe in a rree puipit, anu freedom In our theology. Most churches aro divided Into two fac tions; liberal and fundamental. "Wo aim to make our. churcn rather a university one whero,mom- " uers ot me tacuiiy uiim biuhhif w vorsed In scholarship of the present ' time may come without having their . scientific ideas interrorea wim, A.
