In common with most American cities, Cadillac has been handi capped for several years with & shortnge of houses, and as it Is the desire of the lumber company to retain as many of their formex employes as possible, it was lmper? ative that the former residents of Jennings have some place to live when they came to this city with the mills. In Jennings there nre upwards of about a hundred very well built and desirable houses, the property of the company. The problem was to move them to Cadillnc intact without tearing down or damag ing the structures. A thorough Investigation of dif ferent methods of moving the vil lage was made and at the conclu sion of this investigation a unique tlan of using a motor truck and especially designed and built trail fr was adopted. The houses, were raised by Jacks, the specially do rlgned trallor backing underneath, then ' the buildings lowered until tho weight rested entirely on tho body of tne trailer ana arier mat It was merely a matter of trans portation. After various building movers had been consulted In connection with tho plan of moving the houses Intact, all but one of them said that It was not a praotlcot method and could not be successtully ac complished. Tho ono exception wns Joe D. Knrcher of Cndlllno, who not only expressed his beliot that It could be successfully carried-out, but offered If necessary to back the venture with his last dollar. The project was started last fall nnd completed by the close of January with the excep tion of a warehouse, some of the privately owned residences nnd tho church shown In tho accom panying Illustration.
