They are con Tinced that this type of aerial trans portation is practical as evidenced by their expenditures in this field, au thorized and contemplated. The navy now has under construction it the plant of the Goodyear Zeppelin. Corp. at Akron, Ohio, two airships, each with a capacity of 6,G(0,000 cu. ft of helium gas. This contract calls for a capital expenditure of $R,000( 000. Atlantic coast facilities at .Lake hurst are adequate for the operation of one of these units. Additional fa cilities for the other ship to be based in southern California call for an additional expenditure of $5,000,000. With the navy's program well tinder way and the first flight of the scheduled for July, 1931, the Question naturally raises what are tbs poaSlbiuiieB ui tiihglbloa In a com mercial capacity? MMODELS (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5) tilatlon. hrdraulic internnl hrsbR. crankshaft vibration balancer, and others, Graham-Paige wnj free to concentrate on improvements to pro mote boauty, comfort, and easy rid ing. The results are apparent in all models, the new 612. Ibwest priced cf the line, sharing with the iHrtrpr sitph and eights in the thoroiiKhRoing re vision or oony trim and nttinjis. Of chief interest amonjr the me chanical developments is the intro duction of a new chassis for model 612, the popular-priced six-cylinder model that has led Graham-Pais-6 sales this year with a total of 3-V 000 cara between January 7 and August 1, whenprodnction of the new model began. The new 612 Is larger, heavier, and more powerful than its predecessor. The wneelbase has been extended from 112 Inches to 115, with a resultant improvement not only in appearance but, even more important, in roadability and riding ?ualltles, the latter two factors being urther improved by the adoption of Ifir-T tirfs. The new engine is at o i8 Inch bor by 4 1-2 inch stroke, the bore hnving been increased from 3 inches. With it increased displacement, t 7 cu. in. instead of 190, the new engine develops a maximum of (VJ horse power, and moreover reaches the peak of its power at only 3000 r. p. m., as compared with 62 h. p. at 3200 r. p. m. in the previous model. Bet ter acceleration and sperd result from the gain in power, while the low pPHk-power engine speed is of equal importance in promoting hill-elimb-fng ability and flexibility in high gear. General construction of the engine is the same tin In the -larger models, the 612 having aluminum invar-sini pirtoni. water-jacketing to the full depth of the bore, water pump and fenerator driven by the timing chain nstead of from the fan belt, and ofher Oraham-Paige features. En gine suspenftion is at four points, rubber at tbe rear, and ft new form of solid cross member support at the front. Oil capacity has hen increased to 7 quarts instead of 6. Increased strength, to keep the longer wheelbase and the gain in weight and power, is built into the frame. The depth of the side rails is now 6 1-2 inches, and the thickness also is increased. Ko consistent Is Graham-Paige Sractice throughout all its line that etails of new model 012 bodies Illus trate In general the Improvements In all models in structural details, the larger and higher priced cars vary ing chiefly in such features aa up holstery, trim materials, and finisn. For instance, the instrument board follows the same general plan in all models. Each of the HU1 Is indiv itiuaiiy framed in a narrow chromium plated bead set directly into the satin finish lackground of the dash panel. The new arrangement permits of ex cellent lighting of each dial for night driving. Tne arrangement ror adjusting me position of the full width 'front seat cives a range of four inches. The entire seat and back are moved as a unit by means of a amall crank near the floor, where either the driver or the passenger may readily operate it even while the car is in motion. The seat remains locked in any position. In the two-door sedan, with sep arate front seats, a wider range of adjustment is provided, and either seat may be moved Independently of the other. The driver or passenger, by pulling out a knob at his side, may move the seat fore or aft, with a j choice of six locked positions. In i normal use, the rails on which the seat slide are entirely concealed. , when the locking knob Is pu lulled out, the seats automatically aline forward under spring tension, making a wide entry way to the rear passenger com partment. Change of riding position In the reer eat is effected by moving the seat cushion only. A tall person, or one who likea to lean well back, will prefer the forward position, which makes a deeper seat and alters the slope of the cushion. In the rear po sition, better comfort is provided for a passenger who is short or likea to sit upright. The seat is held in either place bv two lugs that fit into cor responding recesses In the cushion frame. The rear of the cushion in either position fits closely In the cushion frame. The rear of the cush ion In either position , fits closely against the seat-back, which is so constructed that its springs keep it in close contact with the cushion. The rear seat adjustment is intended as a convenience or Tegular owner passengers, so that the cushion may remain in the most comfortable posi tion. Both the 612 md 615 models cll. play a new three-spoke steering wheel. It la so mounted that one spoke Is straight forward when the front wheels of the car are running dead ahead. The forward spoke thus serves aw a direction indicator. The other two are thus ljk the proper position for drivers who like to hold tne wheel ny tne spoaes, ana tne wide space between makes the Instrument board fully visible. Extremely sturdy roof construction La a mark of the new Graham-Paige bodies. Tbe front corners above the windshield are rigidly held against crosswise or lengthwise movement by means of a newly designed steel brace of great Btiffness, bolted In place in i. j. lurce uirections.
