Mr. (TURN TO PAGE 7) E! Agua Callente, Baja California (Mexico) August 21 This being Mexico, an absolutely unvolstcady land, glasses clinked merrily in the hotel and casino of the trans-border "Monte Carlo" the other night in honor of Tex Rankin, famous Ameri can stunt flier. For Tei, flying a tiny fuur-cyiinder Great Lakes plane, its Cirrus motor powered with Kich field gasoline ana lubricated with Kirhlnh c, had jiiat lauded here at forty-eight minutes and twenty-six seconds after S p. m.; had just set an officially sanctioned non-stop, non refuelled, solo record from Canada to Mexico. The plane having taken off that morning at 4:40:37 a. in., the official time was announced by the observers as 13 hours, 7 minutes and 49 Beconds, an average of better than 100 miles per hour for the entire distance. And, aside from the size of the little sport ship which Tex used its wingspread being but 28 feet; its en gine only a 90 horsepower, 4-eylinder affair the most comment was caused by his true economy record. For a check of the shin showed that only 75 gallons of Richfield had been used for the 1350 miles an average of 18 miles to the gallon. "Why, that's better than an auto average!" was the amazed exclama tion which went around when it le came known that the plane still con tained 2. gallons of the lOO-gallon load with which it had been sUrted. On landing here at the Agua Cal iente airport, Rankin was officially welcomed to Mexico by J. G. Castro, representing Mayor Adrian Cubillas of Tijuana and bv Mayor CnbilM's committee: J. Sepulveda, G. Ter roros nnd S. B. Reachi. BUICK PRODUCTION OK STEPPED OP Production at the plants of the Buick Motor companv at Flint, Mich., is being rajiidly stepped up to meet the terrific demand for the new M)30 models which were introduced to the public in a nation-wide display on July 27. Reports from dealers throughout America indicate that in terest in the new line is running un usually high and that sales are be ing made in greater volume than at anj time in recent years. Buick's output for the month of July reached l!f!95 cars and officials state that, in gearing the production to meet the sales demand, it will be necessary to Iwost the output even more during the month of August. The July production exceeded by far the total for the same month Inst year when 10,404 motor cars were manufactured. Never before in Buick history have such throngs visited the showrooms across the country during the first days of new model displays. Up wards of two million persons nv (lie 1930 buu'ks in the larger cities on the dny the cars were shown for the first time, Buick's dealer body, comprising something over 3000, are. extremely enthusiastic over the new lftHO line, as evideuced by the tremendous amount of telegrams and letters which have poured into the executive offices since the cars went on dis play. All over America dealers are notifying the zone offices to increase their allotments in order that they may meet the rapidly rising tide of sales. That the new Buick has completely captured the admiration of the pub lic is proven by the enthusiastic tele grams and letters received at the fac tory by Buick's own organization in the field and the public at large. The regional and none headquarters throughout America report that mo torists who have visited the show rooms since the opening dny are nl most unanimous In their praise of the 1030 cars ihat visitors are particu larly delighted with the lines of the models and the extra margin of qual ity which has been built into them. The new price schedule, which shows a decrease has been one of the factors In sending sales totals sky ward. These new low prices, made possible bv modern production meth ods in spite of the many mechanical improvements in the 1930 cars, are serving to materially strengthen Buick's position of leadership in the fine car field. F Ease of handling and speedy per formsnce in traffic, besides economy In operating costs, have plnyed an Important part In the record recep tion accorded the Superior Whippet fours this year, according to reports received by the Wlllys-Overlsnd com pany from dealers. Of course, the present model Is somewhat heavier snd roomier than in the trade. Although no drastic changes have been mads In the Whip pet four rate of top speed snd quicker plck-un thst has msde it s dominant ssles factor in the trade. Although no drastic changes hsve been made in the Whippet four engine, a number of refinements and minor Improve ments account for Its increased pow er. The stroke In the present motor hss been Incressed 8-8 of n Inch with the bore remaining the same. Besides the increase In ths stroke, the compression ratio hss slso been boosted from the old ratio of 5 to 1 to a new one of 6.5 to 1- THREE NEW SIXES Graham-Paige has introduced its 1930 models, presenting a line of three sixes aud two eights replete with chassis and body Improvements. All models except the lowest-priced bii have the standard-shift four-speed transmission, which has been a fea ture of the line for tw and a hdlf years, the Graham-Paige company having led the whole industry in rec oguizing tho advantages of the four H,Ked drive aud in per&ctTjtig its mechanism. The 1930 models, although repre senting substantially increased value, are offered without, change of price, beginning with S55 for tho two-door sedan on the Oil! chassis, which is now built three inches longer than formerly and has a larger engine. One of the most striking features of the new Grnhnm-Paige line is nn exclusive innovntion thn nno nf ad justable seats, rear hh well as front, in an six-cyiinuer models and the 1117 inch wheelbase eight. The rear seat cushions offer n choice of two posi tions, changing tit depth and the slope of the aeat. Full width front seats as well as the two separate seats nf (he two-door model 012 may be shifted mechanically, while occu pied, over a wide range of position. Since the clutch and brake pedals of all Graham-Paige cars, and also (ex-' cept in the 612 the steering column, are fullv adjustable, the new models offer the widest possible variation in driver and passenger position. In short, the Graham-Paige can be fit Ud to eai-lt individual as if built to his size and measurements. Summarized, the outstanding fea tures of the Graham-Paige line for 1930 are as follows: A sompletely new model 612 chas sis of lln-inch wheel-base and larger engine, giving increased power at lower engine speed (66 h, p. at 3000 r. n. m.) Bodies of advanced structural de sign. Superior riding comfort, attained not only through the adjustability of both front and rear seats, but through the UBe of over-padded sat cushions, forpi-fitting seat and back contours, and extra seat aud back springing. Clear-vision Instrument panels, without ornamentation but striking ly handsome in appearance. New-type glass visor in chromium brnrketa (except 612.) Three-spoke steering wheels (safety-type) models 6111 and 015. Inspection of the new 012 chassis, nnd of the other two sixes and the two eights, shows the consistent use throughout the line of the latest re finements and improvements in de sign and equipment. For once, how ever, a new line of cars is presented in which the achievements of the body engineers are. likely to arouse more interest among motorists In general than are the mechanical details, even with one new chassis model in the line-up. . , The 1930 Grahnm-Paige models re flpct the results of a comprehensive campaign to promote riding comfort and ease for driver and passengers, through adjustable seating position, improved seat and back cushions, and convenient accessories, while at the same time enhancing the beauty of S.
