Newspaper Page TextPage Six THE ETJGI5NE GUARD nn CRANKSHAFT STOPS Now details of engineering and xclucire features of deeUm In the engine and chassis of the Pontiae Big Six mark Oakland's latest creation as the mechanical aristo crat in the field of low-priced sixes. ccordlng to Harrj W. Bryden, of the Eugene Motor Company. The most outstanding ad ran tare J resented by the new Pontiae Is ound in the larger engine which develops 67 brake horsepower at 8000 r. p. m., an Increase of nine horsepower over the engine of the previous aeries. Piston displacement has been enlarged from 166 Inches to 200 Inches, the new bore and stroke being 8 5-16 by 8 7-8 inches against 8 1-4 by 8 8-4 inches in But besides this new reserve of engine power, the Jf ontiac Dig six ox fers many other important new features. Included among them are new counter-balanced 58-pound crankshaft; Harmonic balancer, new self-energizing four-wheel brakes; heavier rear axle; new transmission, and new HotchkJss drive. The engine, while retaining the principle of oversize vital parts as a means of assuring stamina and long life, presents many new ad vancements in design. In the larger vertical type lj4 inch carburetor are incorporated both an econo mleer" which mixes a lean gasoline charge for normal driving Bpeeds and an accelerating pump which functions only when quick pickup is desired. A new and larger three port manifold distributes the mixture evenly to the engine, while larger in take valves of 1 inch diameter with lift increased to 5-16 of an Inch permit rapid and complete charging of the cylinders. Dampeners pre vent surging or chattering of valve springs at high speed and assure uni formly efficient valve action at all speed ranges. A new quieting cam shaft curve also assists in achieving silent valve action. The massive new crankshaft is balanced both statically and dynam ically. It turns on three large, bronze-backed, babbit-faced. Inter changeable bearings. On the forward end of the crankshaft and forming a unit with the fan pulley, Is a new harmonic balancer, similar In de sign to that recently developed frr the Oakland All-Amerlmn six. It has been Incorporated in the new Pontiae big six engine to eliminate any possibility of vibration or crankshaft whin which the enlarged power plant might tend to develop. The nlghly snccessful O-M-R high compression, cylinder head in two re- i movable sections has been retained. The new pistons are of semi-steel, with locked 1 1-16 inch piston pins said to be the largest used in any car priced below $1,000. The dis tributor and the oil pump which cir culates 175 gallons of oil at 25 m. p; h. are driven through a spiral camshaft gear with ft safety feature whlci Immediately stops the car in the remote event that the pump should fall. Main bearings, con necting rod besrinn and timing chain are lubricated by regulated, constant flow pressure oil feed. The gas filter, fuel pnmn, thermo static temperature control and air deflector continue as ntnndnrd en gine equipment as does also the preesure-suction type of crnnkrnse ventilator. The cross-flow radiator, an exclusive feature of Onkland and Pontiae sixes, has been Increased to 808 square Inches of frontal core in order to take care of the greater heat output of the larger engine. Several Improvements have been engineered Into the transmission units. A ten-spline main driving shaft re- 5 laces the former slx-spllne shaft, 'he Hot ch kiss drive principle now is utilised Instead of the torque-tube drive. A new design of gear tooth has been adopted which distributes the load over a greater tooth area, reducing both gear wear and gear noise. The front axle Is heavier and the rear axle is exactly the same type ns that used In the new Ail American 81x.
