Vance had traced a picture found In the apartment of the murdered Margaret Odcll to Alys. Ho is trying to prove to Markhum that Skeel did not commit the murder despite the fact that Skeol's finger-prints were found In the apartment. Vance believes Skeel was hiding in a closet while the murder was committed. Mark ham ridicules the theory, but Vance is unshaken. Ho believes tho murder was committed by one of the following four: Mann.x, Cleaver, Dr. Lindqulst or Spots woode. Ho Is trying to get aome information from Alys La Fosse. CHAPTER XXVM "I'm sure It will be a success." Vance spoke with disarming friendliness. "Wore you home alone all Monday evening?" "Hardly." The Idea seemed to amuse her. "I went to the 'Scan dals'but I came home early. J knew Louey Mr. Mannlx was coming." "I trust h appreciated your sacrifice." Vance, I believe, was disappointed by this unexpected alibi of Mannlx's. If was, Indeed, so final that further Interrogation concerning It seemed futile. After a momentary pause, he changed the subject. . "Tell mo; , what do you know about a Mr. Charles Cleaver? lie was a friend of Miss Odoll's." "Oh, Pop's ull right." The girl was plainly relieved by this turn In tho conversation. "A good scout. He was certainly gone on Margy. Even after she threw him over for Mr. Spotswoode, be was raitnrm as you might say always running after her, sending her flowers and presents. "Soino men are like that. Poor iild Pop! He even phoned me Mon day night to call up Margy for him and try to arrango a party May be If I'd done It, she wouldn't be dead now . , , Its a funny world, Isn't It?" "Oh, no end funny." Vance smoked calmly for a minute; I could not help admiring his self control. "What time did Mr. Cleav er phone you Monday night do you recall?" From his voice one would have though tile question of no Importance "Let me see , . , ' She pursed her Hps prettily. "It was just ten minutes to twelve. I remember that the little chime clock on the mantel over there was striking midnight, and at first I couldn't hear Pop very woll. You see, I al ways keep my clock ton minutes fust so I'll novor be late for an appointment." Vauce compared the clock with his watch. , "Yes, it's ten minutes fast. And what about the party?" "Ull, 1 was too busy ta k ne about the new show, and 1 had to reiitBo. Anyway, Mr. Miinnix didn't want to have a party that nlgbt... It wasn't my fuuit, was it?" "Not a bit of it," Vance assured her. "Work comes before pleasure i-espociaUy work as Important as yours , . . And how. there is one other niiui I want to ask you about and then ! wont; bother you any more. wnat was. the situation be- twoen Miss Odull and Doctor Lind qulst?" ; Miss Ln Fosse became genuinely perturbed. I was afraid you woro going to ask me about him." There was approhonslou In her oyes. "I don't Know just wliut to any. Hu whs wildly In love with Margy; and sho led him on, top. lint sho was sorry for It afterward, because ho got jealous like a crazy poison. "tie usud to pester .tho Ufo out of hor. Anyway 1 think she was taking awful nances , . , Oh I Do you think It could) have boon do you really think 1" "And wasn't tliero anyone olno" Vance Interrupted, "who might have felt the same way? any one Miss Odoll had reason to fuar?" "No." Miss La Fosses shook lior head. "Margy didn't know many men lutlmatuly. h'ho didn't chnuge often, If you know what I mnan. And you have nothing whatever (o fear. No ono shall ever know of our llttlo visit this morning." "Wlui do you think klllfd Alar- gyT Thero was genuine emotion In tho girl's voice. "Louey says It was probably some burgler who wanted her Jewels. "I'm too wise to sow discord ln this happy menage by even ques tioning. Ir. Mnnnlxs opinion," said Vance half bnntcrlngly. "No one knows who's guilty: but tho nollco agree with Mr. Mnnnlx.' For n moment the girl's doubts Returned, and sho gnvo mice a a.tnrrniug iook. "Why are you so interested? You didn't know Margy, did you? She never mentioned you." Vauce laughed. "My dear child', I only wish I knew hy I nut so deuced con cerned In tilts affnlr. (Thursday, September 13; afternoon) "My sleuthing goes better,' 'ex ulted Vance when we were again In the Btreet. Fair Alys was a veritable mine of Information eh, what' Only, you should have con trolled yourself belter when she mentioned her beloved's name really you should, Van old thing. I saw you jump and heard you heave. Such emotion is most un becoming ln a lawyer." . From a booth in a drug store near the hotel he telephoned Mark ham: "I am taking you to lunch. I have numerous confidences I would pour Into your ear." A de bate ensued, but In the end Vance emerged triumphant; and a moment later a taxlcab was . driv ing, us down-town. "Alys Is clever there are brains in that fluffy head," ho ruminated. "She's much smarter than Heath; she knew at once that Skeel wasn't guilty. Her characterization of tho Immaculate Tony was Inelegant but how accurate oh, how accur ate! And you noticed, of course, Irbw she trusted me. Touchin', wasn't it? . , . It's a knotty prob lem, Van. Something's amiss somewhere." "Mannlx . . . Curious he should crop up again. And he issued or ders to Alys to keep mum. Now, why? Maybe the reason he gave her was the real one. Who knows? On the other hand, was he with his chere amle from half past ten till early morning. Well, well. Again, who knows? Something queer about that business discus sion. , "Then Cleaver. He called up just ten minutes before midnight oh, yes, he called up. That wasn't a fairy-tale, liut how could he tele phone from a speeding car? He couldn't. Maybe he really wanted to have a party with his recalci trant Canary, don't y' know. But then, why the brummagem alibi? Funk? Maybe. "But why the clrcultousness? why didn't he call his lost love direct? Ah, perhaps he did! Some one certainly called her by phone at twenty minutes to twelve. "We must look Into that, Van. Yes, he may have called her, aud then when a man answered who the deuce was that man, any way? he may have appealed to Alys? Quite natural, y" know. Anyway, he wasn't ln Boonton poor Markham! How upset he'll be when he finds out "But what really worries me Is that story of the doctor. Jealous mania: It squares with Ambrolso's character perfectly. He's the kind that does go off his head. I knew his confession of paternalism was a rod herring. My word! So the doctor was making threats and flourishing pistols, eh? Bad, bad. I don't like It. With those ears of his, be wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger. Paranoia that's it. Delusions of persecution. Probably thought the girl and Pop or may be the girl and Spotswoode were plotting his misery and laughing at him. "You can't tell about those chaps. They're deep and they're dangerous. The canny Alys had him sized up warned the Canary against him . . . Taken by and large, It's a devilish tangle. Any way. I feel rather bucked. We're moving oh, undoubtedly- we're moving though in what direction I can't even guess. It's beastly annoyin'." Markham was waiting for us at the Bankers' club. He greeted Vance irritably. "What have you got to tell me that's so damned Important?" "Now, don't get ratty." Vance was beaming. "How's your lode star, Skeel, behaving?" "So fur he's done everything that's pure and refined except join the Christian Endeavor Society." "Sunday's coming. Give him time ... So you're not happy, Markham, dear?" "Was I dragged away from an other engagement to report on my state of mind?" "No need. Your state of mind's execrable . . , . Cheerio! I've brought you something to think about." "Damn it! I've got too much to think about how." "Hero, have some brioche." Vance gave the order for lunch vlthout consulting either of us. 'And now for my revelations. Pop Cleaver wasn't ln Boonton last Monday, night. He was very much In the midst of our modern Go morrah, trying to arrange a mid night party." "Wonderful!" snorted Markham. "I lave in the font of your wis lom. His alter ego, I take it, was on the road to Hopatcong. The sper-natural leaves me cold." "You many be as pancosmlc as you choose. The high earning power of the Company's investments has been again demonstrated. , The net rate of interest earned on the mean invested assets, after fully providing for in vestment expenses, was 6.47 per cent. This 'gratifying result has been made possible by dividend increases, bonuses and stock privi leges accruing on many of the Company's holdings. The wisdom of the investment policy which lias been consistently followed in past years, in favouring long term bonds and the stocks of outstanding and very carefully select ed cor porations, has been once more emphasized. The appraisal of our securities shows that the excess of market values over cost increased during the year by S19.235.889.91). ln addi tion, a net profit of $5,028,033.20 accrued from the redemption or sale of securities which had risen to high premiums. The quality of the investments listed in the assets is testified by the fact that orrboth bonds and preferred stocks not one dollar, due either as interest or dividend, is in arrear for even one day, while the dividends accruing to com mon stocks are greatly in excess of the divi dends payable on the same stocks at the time of purchase.
