She did not look up, but tapped her egg and buttered her toast with pretended .bsorption. "Glory," he sold at last. She raised ber ejeB. Dick was white and hag rirdi "Dick, you're craiy to try to go to the office, today," she said. "Why don't you stay homo and rest. Dr. John will have a fit when he finds, out you've gone to work." j "Never you mind about me, Glory, j It's you I'm thinking about, just bow," Dick answered In a low tone. J "I've been lying awake most of the j night thinking about you, to tell the' truth .... Look here, Glory, did you lore me or not when you married, me?" j "Oh, dear, do we have to go into ill that right now? Can't we have! one mcnl in pence," Gloria's voice ; wis pathetic. "First of all we row shout money and maids and . now you want to raise the roof again, I suppose about yesterday afternoon, j Let s forget it. "I wish I could," Dick answered. "But it's a pretty serious thing for a fellow to come home and find his wife entertaining another man . . . . eepecially a duck like TVayburn!" He came over and put his arms srotmd Gloria. "Honey, I know there was nothing j wrong about your little party, yester- j day. You were bored and you wanted a little thrill, a tasto of excitement, j But other people won't Bee it that j way. They'll soon be saying that my ; wife's in love with that cheap actor They'll have you in the .May Seymour class, first thing you know!" I "What's everybody down on May I for?" Gloria asked. "I don't blame her . little bit for going around with Jim Carewe, if her own husband . won't take her anywhere! . . . Why j doesn't he get n't to himself, and ' set that he's losing May?" j Dick pondered. I "I suppose he's too busy. And t snywsy, a husband is always the Inst ; person to hear rotten gossip about his , ife," he said. He was looking out of the dining- room window, that faced the street, i witching the Donberg twin, who lived next door. They were running races 1 with their new alredale pup . . . their j iturdy legs twinkling past each other ! like the part, of a perfectly-ge.red I machine. i "Gosh, Glory, wouldn't It be nice If we had a couple of little kids like thoie two?" he asked, tightening him "old of her. "A couple of jolly little ; youngsters who'd race down the street every night to meet me ... "Yes, and who'd scrntch up all the ; furniture, and turn the house in to a boiler-factory when it came to noise!' N" thank you, swoetiel I'm afraid III have to aquelch your fond hopes ." She wriggled out of Dick's ; rail and got to her feet. Dick, with his hands gripped, stood looking down, at her. "Honey," he said, "yon're just "eating yourself when you make up' Tour mind not to have children. Why ! don't you want them? .... What' ao yu think marriage Is for, any-: way?" "loria laughed stridently. i "How do I know what marriage Is for? I didn't Invent it!" she cried. 1 "It's not my idea of worldly bliss, let; tell you! I've seen too much of 'he Inst couple of months!" She walked out of the room. ! . "1 " by the paper that Myra Gall nen left out Everybody I l joining bnt ma " Bh broke down completely. Gloria could hear her wildly aobbuu. Hh. had not knows that May could taaa ! a anno this way. May had alway. seemed to be hardened .(abut the unkind thing, that w.r. uld .iu.ni her and her lor. affair with Jim! carewe. "Let "em talk!" she had dway. , told Gloria, recklessly. "When they're talking about me and Jim they're 1 giving somebody else a rest!" j : And .he had shown tha world of gossips a shining armor of defiance, j But now that armor was utterly gone, i May was defeneeleaa, .uddenly, in the lacv oi mis new .nun. "Oh, I know what', the matter with the old hens who started the club," May went on presently in a choky voice. "They think I'm abso lutely beyond th. pal. because I lunch downtown with Jimmy one. or twice a wee. They might know th.t there', nothing to th. whole thing: oy tne Iran., open way w. .e. each other. . . . Why, yon know th.re'a nothing wrong between m. and Jim, don't you, Glory?" "Of course, 1 do!" Gloria ..id In dignantly. She wa. very glad that she had been asked to join, however. For the first time since she had known her, Glory had a warm friend ly feeling for Mother Gregory, who had managed to get her into th. club. "Well, then, for the lov. of Maud, go to your mother-in-law, and do what you can for m. She's the head of th. membership committee, I he.r," May want on more calmly. "Tell her I'm through with Jim C rewe, if you like. That ought to fetch her!" "But are you?" Gloria asked, cau tiously. "I I gusss so," May answered. "I've juit made up my mind that the game isn't worth the acandal! . . . After all, seeing Jim or any other man once in a while isn't worth the loss of my rep . . . my good name, is it? . . . You've got to play the women's game their way in this world, Glory, or they won't let you piay at all, do you know It? . . .', Now do your best for m. with Dick's j mother, won't you? I'v. Juet got to get into that club." Gloria promised she would. t 8he went back Into the sunroom, I and picked up a magazine, wonder-1 ing how to present May's very weak' case to her mother-in-law. ; "That was May Seymour on the ! phone." she began. ! "I wish you wouldn't see so much of that woman," Mrs. Gregory re-! plied. "As I've told you before, she's ' a thoroughly bad woman. I heard some dreadful stories about her and tlint good-for-nothing- Carewe the other day. She doesn't deserve that nice husband of hers. And as for Carewe, he ought to be tarred nnd feathered!" This was what wotiitn could do to one of their own sex who , stepped over the boundary of good ! behavior that they had laid down for themselves throughout the centuries!; Women had made May a pariah j an outcast! They had kept her out of! their clubs given her the cold shoulder. They had shown her that If she j wanted to defy them she would have ' to walk alone ... as other foolish I and defiant women had walked alone. ! and worn the scarlet letter of shame nnd solitude. Gloria wondered what would hap pen to her if her women frlrnds knew that she had been seeing Stan ley Wayburn alone. Sho wondered what they would do when they did find out ... if they ever did.
