"The activity of the Northern lines In planning for mi early start on the proposed extension from Item! to Klamath 1'n I Is and on to California is an indication of the determination of the Great Northern-Northern Pacific group to curry forward the ambitious prcgraui of the late James J. Hill to provide a line of railway from the Co lumbia river, east of the Cnscade mount aim-, to the Western PacifV !ine on San Francisco bay. Such a connection would ha a challenge to the Southern pacific and Union Pa cific systems to share with their ri vals a large part of the traffic mov ing between California and the Nor thern tier of stales." Details of a running night battle of guns and blows on the lower Clacks inns river, in which wardens nnd alleged fish pirates suffered slight injuries, were related yesterday when tho men un dor arrest entered a plea of not guilty before Judge Jrfwis at Oak (J rove. The boats drifted nlmost a mile down the river during tho fight, which lasted about half an hour, and which ended when tho wardens, with their boat damaged by a pike pole and leak ing, managed to make fast to that of the fishermen and to clamhor aboard nnd moke the arrests. Shots were freely exchanged, although the offi cers were under orders to shoot to cripple the boat rather than to hit the occupants. Arrest was the result of the open declaration of F. M. Brown, chief dep uty game warden of the state, that salmon "bootlegging" was a common practice and that pirates were in vidiag forbidden territory with nets an 4 selling the fish to Portland deal ers. U Is lawful to fish for salmon only with hook and lint in the Clack- j anisa at the present time. Wardens contended In court today that the two1 men under arrest, Tuffy Hussell of Oregon City and Bun Woodward of Park Place, were a part of a salmon "bootlegging" ring nnd that they had interrupted activities which took thousands of fish from the river.
