To prove that one is practical we show here a bouse that contains enough room to be large and with the lesser expense of a small bouse. The exterior design is one that is most Adaptable and popular on the coast. This design being in shingles will fit into almost any landscape as a small, homey and cheerful resi dence. Being influenced by the English cottage it doeB not take on the char acteristic squareness of the rooms, which is most undesirable. One will notice in glancing; over the floor plan that ell the rooms are large and airy. The bath room at the back be tween two bedrooms is accessible from the kitchen without going through the living quarters which at times can be most embarrassing. There Is a convenient linen closet in the L as well as a sufficient amount of cupboard space in the kit chen. The fireplace located in the end of the room and away from the entrance is nice as it eliminates the cold drafts and chance to blow ashes back into the room. "With a small amount of work in plantings and shrubbery arrangements ! brick vene construction which Is i used In some parts of the country as a make-shift between all frame and masonry construction. It consist of . four-inch brick wall tied with thin ; metal strips to frame stduding and sheaving. Veneer forms one of the 1 worst fir?, hazards possible in resi- uennai bunding, because the firemen cannot tell by exterior appearance, that it is a sham and often enter The building in case of fire believing that the walls are of self-supporting brick construction, only to be crushed by the thin veneer walls. The economy wall is in the main a 4-inch brick wall but with 4-inch pilasters at frequent intervals bond ed into the 4-inch wall so that it be comes seif-siiftaintng and substantial. This wall has been tested and even though the hollow interior of a limine might burn, these walls will stand secure. The wall is also planned so as to give unusual protection around window and dor openings and to provide a substantial masonry bear ing for second floor joista and roof timhers for small dwellings, garages and other buildings of light occupan cy. The new economy wall will have the advantage over any other -construction in use today. Its coat is approximately that of the cheapest frame construction, is much lower then brick veneer, and far below the cost of any wall built with hollow pre-east units. It is declared by brick men. It also affords a much warmer and drier wall than anything yet de vised in masonry, costing less than the solid brick wall. i0 VALUE TAKES E f lool run run HO 531 this could be made an attractive home. - Plans and specifications for this bouse and others published here will be furnished on application to Wai-ters-Bushoug Lumber company. CONCRETE WILLS DESCRIBED ''Houses made fireproof by gypsum concrete walls" are described in the current issue of Popular Science Monthly. The magazine says: Gypsum, commonly called "nlastar marble bleach, asbestos, wood flower and other minerals in various pro portions. Then, thoroughly mixed, is produced mngnicite. The specifica tions vary according to the nature of the work and the lays. Magnesite calcined at low temper ature with magnesium chloride pro duces a cemently quality and has been known for half a century. The secrecy maintained by its manufacturers has hampered its more universal use. Of recent years the public begun to real ize its value, also the similarity of the various named products. When the members of the National Assm-in- i tion of Heal Estate Boards gather in Detroit in June for their anminl con-j vention, they need not go so very far from their headquarters to find striking instance of the way in which real estate values increase. j Manhattan island may have been -sold for $ 23 by the Indians, and aec- tious of Chicago's loop were perhaps I bartered for an assortment at jtandy j trinkets, but the record ( in cash real estate transactions must undoubtedly go to tho plot of ground in this city which was once bought for one large copper cent. The purchaser was Mary Watson Hudson, a citizen of Detroit, who ob tained a plot of jrfouud in accordance with an act of congress, which for a cash consideration granted every real cstnto holding, following the disas trous fire of 1S05 in which the thriv ing little city was virtually destroyed. It is upon the same site which she obtained for a cent that there has been built the $14,000,000 Rook Cadillac hotel, the tallest hotel in the world, and with the largest num ber of rooms of any hotel outside of New York city.
