Heed flax is uminlly short to med ium in height and has numerous branched bearing a large number of bolls. Fiber flax, on' the other' hand, is usually tall with few branches and thus few seed balls. The fromer type uses most of its energy in the production of seed whilo the latter type is limited In seed production, but develops a long straw which con tains the fiber. It fs desirable, there fore, to get god flax varieties of the type you expect to ue. Cool Climate Boat Flax thrives in ,a moist cool cli mate. Kxcessive heat and drought lire not conductive to a large yield of good flnx, especially for fiber. A long, cool, moist, grow lug season with n good, dry period for harvest is nn ideal condition for (he culture of this crop, f j Flax for seed thrivse best only on noils Hint am rich in available fer tility. While the crop growa with fair success on a great ninny soils that ore only medium fertile, yet the largest yields of seed are secured on soils thnt are well supplied with plant food. After an hour or two it should he raked over again continuing at intervals of three or four hours until ft is dried out. This raking over is to prevent the sticking together of the flax seed. If the aecd is made so wet that it sticks to gether, and is allowed to dry in that! fashion,, it is practically impossible to get It into suitable condition for sowing, nn many seeds are damaged in breaking them apart nnd there are small lumps left which do not feed through the drill uniformly. Flax should be sown 'as soon as the ground works well and the weather is warm enough for prompt germination. In normal years. April 1 to 15 is a good date for seeding, although flax on soil that has been plowed early and kept wvli worked and free from weeds has been very successful in moist seasons whrf seeded even ns Into as June. Mangel Beets Good Instead of Kale Foultrynvri of AVestern Oregon are learning the value of mangel beets as a kale substitute as the re sult of the severe weather the last two winters. If beets are fed oc casionally during the fall the birds lenrn to eat them readily in case the kale freezes. While not so good ns kale, beets as succulent feed are rec ommended by station authorities. Farm Reminders If clover sod land which is to be used for potatoes is plowed early and shallow, the clover roots will have time to decay. The land can be turned up deeper two or three weeks before planting. A 50 bushel increase to the acre with potatoes has been realized with this method in O. A. C. experiments. Pig Raising Test Planned for State Fair This Season The ton-litter pig growing contest for Oregon producers will be held nt the Oregon state fair next fall for the first time. Any litter farrowing after March 1, 1025, and weighing not less than ono ton September 20 is eligible tp compete. This means any little purebred, cross-bred or grade. Mildew sprays on gooseberries must he applied immediately to be effec-x tive, reports II. I llnrss, plant path ologist at the experiment station. The before-blossom sprays control mildew without leaving sulphur on the fruit. Sulphur on the berries makes them unfit for canning, according to enn nerymen. A large percentage of "springers" or bulged enns develop when berries with sulphur on are put up.
