GILUOY, I. 1. -(Editor of Tho Cougregntionalist MOTHING so much reveals a man's character na his prayers. If there nre no depths to his nature, if there are no great longings in his life, his prayers will bo formal, cold nnd shallow. If there are great longings nnd as plrntions his prayers will in some Lwny tell of them, oven If his prnyers hp halting nnd poorly expressed. It is In one's prayers for others, also, thnt this self-revelntiou will be found. What aro the highest thingN? What should we most like the peoplr for whom we prny to have wealth, health, happiness, or something eve'i deeper and grenter? What did Jesus desire most for his disciples and friends? This lesson tells us. It is an intercessory prayer for his disciples. tlesus prayed much for himself hut no man prnya really for himself who floes not learn to pray for others. Now aa Jesus Is conscious of having fulfilled his mission "I have glorified ! then on tho earth: I have finished! tha work that thou gnvent me to do" his deepest prayer is for those whom he is about to leave, Whnt is His prnyer. No Creator Prayer ' It is the prayer that they may be kept. Could tbero he a greater and more appropriate prayer than that that ones friends might have a spirit of stability and faithfulness, might never lack power, or sufficiency of grace? But note they are to bo kept through the name of God. "Holy Fnther, keen through thy own name those whom thou hast given ute." Men are not kept by mem chance or circumstance, or by nny slight force. Tho "name" of God stnnds for his chnrncter, and ineu are kept through his power, for his character is love. And this prayer of Jesus Is thnt the disciples may hs kept In unity, j that they may be om ns wo nre." j What Is thnt unity of Fnther audi Son? Vnlty of chnrncter. unity of love and purpose, unity of will, to love the snme things and seek the same ends that Is unity In God ami it Is the unity thnt men ought to seek. Love and grace are the foes of discord and distrust. An Eternal Interoesior Finally, the prayer of Jesut Is that the disciples may hava Joy "that they might have Joy fulfilled ln them selves." No life can ba satisfactory that has not an Inner consciousness of pence. It may be the Joy of the martyr, of the bnrden-benrer, or of the ssvior of his fellowmen, who sees of the travail of his soul and Is satisfied but the joy of a good conscience, a right life, and a sense of ronimuuinn with God, is essential. So Jesus prays that his Joy msy be "fulfilled" in his disciples. We should remember In connection with this prayer thnt Jesun is nn eternnl intercessor. He makes Inter cemion for us nt the right hand of Cod. When we sing the hymn. For You I Am Praying, and ham to pray for TEXT: John 17:1-13 . Not All Marriages Made in Heaven, Pastor Says Dr. Thompson, of Chicago, Speaks Bluntly By HOY J. GIBBONS (NEA Service Writer) QIIICAGO, Feb. 28. Not nil mar riages are innde in heaven. The church Iiiih failed to do its part In preparing young persons for matrimony. Dr. John Thompson, pastor of Chicago's "skyscraper" church In the heart of the loop, startled his con gregation by making the above state ments. But he left somo of the members of the First Methodist Episcopal church aghast when he added that divorce is Justifiable In some cases, "whre couples are not joined by God." Bible students: have placed incor rect interpretations on Jesus' ideas of marriage ami divorce, Dr. Thomp son believes. And the strangest thing about jt all. to Captain Anderson, is the thought thnt anybody should pay any attention to his efforts, curried on now us they have been for more than .'JU years. Joins Coast Guard Back in V2 Anderson joined the old revenue service, now the coast guard service. As a seafaring man. j it hit his ideals of public service, its zealous regard for helping the distressed, carrying out the biblical adage : "Greater love both no man than that he lay down his life for his friend. ' Those were stirring days in the const guard service on the Pacific coast. The annual patrols in Alas kan waters to protect the seals from service man ns quickly ns n ne:il: poachers who would slay a revenue the seemingly suicidnl dashes through 'AUGUST frozen waters to rescue crews stranded in polar seas; the constant menace from fishermen who disre garded the laws. And Anderson played the part in the hiBtory of that epoch which is typical of the coast guard's fine traditions for hu manitarian service. Thirty Years on Duty Of a religious turn of mind, An derson sought an organization to af filiate with one that to his mind measured up in its accomplishments and ideals with the cilist guard ser vice. In tho Salvation Army, with its zealous work for every color or creed, he has been nn active figure for HO yenrs. There were the days of ridicule. As in his service of country, Ander son's service of God was often fraught; with danger. Twice he wasi beaten insensible as he left a not ing hall. But Anderson stuck to both. Today, Anderson, his wife, two daughters and son are zealoaa Sal vation Army workers. And Ander son is respected in bootlegging dr. cles as one man you can't monkey with. Some of the largest captures made in the San Francisco district hm been mode by Anderson's rum-eha er, as it darts through the fog, brat on stopping booze ships, even though guns be resorted to. "I find I can serve God and coun try at the same time, and I belini both in law enforcement and in the goodness of God," Anderson sari.
