i Thursday Evening, Teh Pas Ten . THE EUGENE GUARD MUTT AND JEFF Jeff Thinks Real Estate Is Sold Like Muslin . , By BUD FISHFd I (Continued) IX wtis enrly in tho forenoon. Drukr . k.1.1 1 41.. AH RWrOl II-III1U1 LUC VUb OVIIIH w.l which bubbled the soup and beef for the men's dinner. He bad been put on the ship's Articles as Boy. Every now and then he carried out a bucket of soot nnd clinker to dump over tho lee rail. lie had felt that he was getting a bit grimy. Ho hurried to finish tho job. II would have a chance to wimh before starting on something elwe. As be took out his last bucket of noot, an apprentice climbed down from the standard compass with bis tin of brass cleaning gear. The lad grinned in Brake's face, but before be could utter a remark the second ninte sang out front the poop: "You, Sammy I" The apprentice turned aft, his month open. . "Yes, air." "Give your brass rags to the boy Tes, that black fellow. Who d' ye think? You, Drake, come aft and yet busy on the poop brassworkl Drake hesitated. He bad seen the flutter of a white skirt aft. lie felt as if. he simply dared not obey. If he refused to go aft, it would be in subordination. He would probably be confined in the forepeak. "Boy!" roared Mr. Adams. "Got a move on youl" A grin of good na turftd amusement played at the sec ond mate's eye corners. Drake sud denly made up his mind to face it, and walked aft with his brass rags and tin of brlckdust and oil with his head np and his sooty face turned squarely upon the world. He started with the brads plate that held the patent log. His back was toward the two deckebairs that stood by the saloon skylight. Then he had to come to the wheel, to polish the big brass boss and the in set brass rim.. Stealing a glance at the deckchairs, be grew hot at the sight of Stevens' sneering face. Mary Manning read a book, her fair face rosy red, her blue eyes ever upon her book. The skipper was talking, but she appeared not to hear. Her color deepened aa Drake finished the wheel and went to the skylight to remove the rods. And she got up. Stepping into the companionway she said: "Captain Stevens, 111 come on deck when the work la done. My father would never permit the poop brass work to be neglected until mid fore noon! neither would he tolerate work ing the ship's boya to the point where there was no time for personal clean liness." , Drake stooped to hide a grin. He felt the hot flush of shame surge through him; but he could grin, for Captain Stevens' face turned red, and the bruised lips opened and hung open as the girl vanished with the air und step of an offended princess. "Mister AdamBl Send this con founded boy for'ard and have a couple of hands scrub hiral Got him out o' my sight, d'ye hearl" Druko sat croBB-lcgged on the foro 'hatch ouo dogwatch, sewing a canvas jumper. A piece of old canvas, lay beside him; a cut-out, partly stitched pair of canvas trousers wero thrown over his feet. He sewed expertly. He used the Bailor's pulm and needle liko a sail-maker. Fat little Joe Bunting went over to Drake, nnd his rubicund face reg iHtorcd surprise of tho work done, lie picked up the cunvns trousers. His Hps puckered in a silent whistle, and his twinkling gray eyes widened. "If you wua nt sea long enough to Irani to tailor like that, you ain't got no business as a boy aboard this ship," he said. Ilo regarded Drake's grinning face with a puzzled expres sion, examining again the well cut garment in his hand. It was made of old canvas, softer than new, truly, but it wns the fashioning of the work rather tbun the stitching that arrest ed attention. That sort of work was seen in the grand old dcepwater men of a past and gone decade. Joe could do it, and a few others aboard the Orontes, but it was not a general accomplishment, and the ability to turn out work of that sort hinted at a real apprenticeship to the sailing ship. "Wo learned to do little jobs for ourselves when I was a boy at sea." Drake Bmiled. "Nothing much in it Sails gave me a bit of canvas and lent me his ssilmaker's bog. I asked Ike Saintly for a pair of scissors, and he borrowed thcue from Miss Man ning." Joe was thoughtful. He glanced aft.--The skipper and Mary Manning walked the poop together, along the weather side from taffrail to the break. The skipper seemed happy. The girl was luughing and full of pleasant 'chatter. "Well, matey," ' said Joe, "there ain't a bloke in this ship as can turn out clobber like thut. an' you may luy to that. I never cut out a pair o' bags to ekal them, not in all niy goin1 fishin'. I ain't makin' no re marks, me son, an' I ain't arskin' so question wot ain't none o" my busi ness. If so be as you wants to ship boy in this pocket, boy you kin be for all Joe lluntin' '11 bother yuh. But if you does other jobs same as you're a-doin' this, I'll gamble my donkey's brekfust you won't stay boy long. What yor doin' it for, any how?" "Fun!" said Drake, thinking Joe referred to bis being in the ship at all. "Fun! Why don't yuh git yer things outa the slop chcBt? You can't make everything you want. You won't never 'avo n6 stand caBy." . "Captain Stevens refused to let me havo tilings out of the slops. Said at my rate Of wages I'd need all the al lowance coming iq me 10 uuy oil skins and boots wheu the weather gets bad." "Then I'd wear my old dungnreca till I was bare-logged, me lad!" growled Joe. "Show 'im up nforo tu' gall". . .. "1 wonder, Joe," grinned Drnko, Bteallng a glance n't (To he continued) . Cynthia Grey Says: 1 By CYNTHIA GHJSY '"PHIS dangerous ago of woman is 40.' For this we iuve the word of the moot brilliant woman in Denmark, Karin Michaolls. However true it may be, there h no doubt that 40 is far and away the most discouraging time of a woman's life. It Is tho time when ehe stops put ting candles on her birthday cake . . . and starts putting cold cream on her first wrinkles. Ah, those frrat wrinkles! Whole books could be written on them. For they are one of the spremo tragedies of a woman's life . . . . or they can bel It all depends on the t woman, v., "Yes, I'm pretty now," says Pln ero'a Paula Taoqueray. "Hut ern now I notice that the lines in my faeo are getting deeper. So are the hollows about my eyes . Sovn I'll be a worn-out creature . . . my hair too bright, my eyes too dull, my bod? too thin or too scout, my cheeks red dled and ruddled! O ghost, a' wreck, a caricature!" ' ' And there In a' nutnhcl you have the whole tragedy of a grrnt clan of women . ... the buttnrfly type that ibas neither a job nor children to keep her young. - Usually her family consist of a husband who pays tho bills. She has nothing In Ufa to depend upon except the things tht a pretty face gives a woman . . . admira tion from men. envy from other wom en, and good times. And when her looks to gone, those things are gvne with them. At 40, the butterfly woman peer into the glass nnd know that in a few years she will bo liko Longfel low's "yellow lent In autumn" . . sere and wrinkled. 1 And with one Inst clutch t her Ynninhlng youth, she plunges Into wild pnycty and helnted romance . . . thf only things that mean Anything In her life. And that Is what Knrln Mlchnrlls menus. 1 think, when she says that lit Ih the dangerous age for women. Hut not for all women! IVr the worker typo It ! the time when lie ln'ifins to score on life. Such women as Ethel Tlsrrymnre end .Knthleen Norrls are nt the verv height of their fame end power at 40. In ajiother eight years, when th childlike Mary IMrkford will he 40. Riie will probably be the grenteat film-idny-prodiiccr In the world aa foilnv she Is the greatest ao!r. For at 32 she In wisely getting Teadv to do that very tittle thing! "I pJinll soon be 2.1." Olorin Hwnn shn vntri the other div when she married a French marouis. "And then 1 shall leave the screen for cond, and have a large family of children to keep nte voting In niv old age." I think that, without exception, thn! I" the most scnsiMe remark that ever fell from the routed Hps of a film actres . . . those wonictl who know better than any others what i trsgedv a wrinkle or a double rhln can be! For middle ape has no tenors for the woman with a family. At thut time children havo UBually passed be yond the bothersome age and have ne couie a sourco of pride and keon pleasure. And It is one of the tricks of fate that, nine times out of ten, tho mu ture woman who has been too busy to bother about lior complexion and figure, has kept both of them to a far greator extent than her idlo sister who has spent both time and money on face massage, hair dyes, and milk packs. "Grow old gracefully'' was the slo gan of our grandmothers. "Grow old busily" hi the more mod ern one . . . nnd the chance are that you'll grow old very slowly, too!
