AGGIES STAND AT CONFERENCE HEAD OREGON AGRICtTLTURAJj COJ LEGE, CORVALLIS, Feb. 8. (Spe cial)) At ciactly the halfway point in their conference season, thfr Aggie basketball team stands at the top of both the coast and northwest divi sions. This position was attained by 0. A. C.'s defeat of Washington last wek and the subsequent humbling of Oregon by Washington. Hnving taken their road trip early in the season, the Aggies are in R fairly strong position now as all but one of the 10 gsmes remaining on llieir schedule will be ployed on the home floor. That one game is the sncond match with Oregon which will he played in Eugene. The rnco in the coast conference is so close at the mid-season mark, however, that the cbampionshtp may easily go any of at least four ways. The success of the Aggies so far lias been quite spectacular. They have won !i out of 10 games played, nine of these being Northwest conference games with five counting in the coast rsce. Nino games were played on the pre-season trip south, six being wiu. On the northern road trip I'nach "Bob" Hager's men made a elean sweep of the conference teams with the exception of Washington. That defeat was evened up with the decisive victory here last Friday. The Aggies have met and defeated every conf.-rence team at least once Mcept Oregon. He Is a firm believer in doing things just a little different In company with Loren Murchlson, an almost equally famous run ner, he has arranged for a world tour that will give them a chance to spread the gospel of athletics In many countries where it now re ceives little or no consideration. As runners, they will really be a pair of the greatest unofficial sport missionaries the. world has ever known. Present plans call for them to sail for Europe early in February. the Giants longer to recover. Mc Graw's teams have needed a period of three years to recuperate after losing a championship. These teams stand out as the great teams of the last 20 years in base ball: Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Ath letics, New York Giants, Chicago White Sox and tie N.ew York Amer icans. The old-timers will recall that the Chicago Cubs, managed by the late Frank Chance, then known as the "Peerless Leader," won three titles in a row in 1906-07-08. At a time when the Cubs were re garded as well nigh invincible, Pitts burgh, under Fred Clarke, came along and knocked them off their pedestal. It was a rather surprising victory. Incidentally the Pirates kept up their winning ways by trimming Detroit, champions of the American league. The following season, in an effort to prove the Pirate victory was in the nature of a fluke, the Cubs finish ed out in front, only to be defeuted by the Athleties in the world series. The season of 1010 started the AbhleticB on a rampage in the Amer ican league that lasted for two year-, the Boston lied Sox winning in 1012. The Athletics proved their great ness by throwing off the rule of te Red Sox, by winning not only the next season but the following one. Then came the fall of that great team in the world series of 1014, when the Boston Braves beat 'em four straight. The Chicago White Sox showed the way to the American league clubs m 1017, were beaten in WIS, then came right back in 1D1B, outclassing tiie field, only to he engulfed by the world series scandal and the Cincinnati Reds. Just at the time the Philadelphia Athletics were flashing across the baaebsil horizon in the American lea gue, John McGraw and his Giants were reigning supreme in tjhe Na tional. The Giants won the pennant in 1011-12-13, only to be beaten in each world series by the American league entry. The New York club passed out of the National pennant picture in 1011. when the Boston Braves surprised the baseball world. Pat Moran sprang another equally great surprise by putting over the Phillies in 1015, while the win of Brooklyn in 101U was almost as un expected. After having three seasons to re build, McGraw put over another win ner in 1017,, only to take another knockout in the world series. Then came three more dull years for .McGraw, in which Chicago. Cin cinnati and Itrooklyn hogged the pennant spotlight. Getting back in the running in 1921 McGraw, greatest of all pennant-winning managers, cupped the title. He proceeded to win four straight pennants, thereby setting a new man agerial record. If ths Yankees are to follow in the system that Mrflrew has set for New York clubs. Miller lluggins' entry isn't deetined to come hack for three yearn. Unquestionably the Yankees are one of the atrongt-st teams in the American league. The defeat last s. ason was unexpected. It is just pos sible titat lluggins will upset baseball tradition in New York.
