i t Page Twelve THE EUGENE OUAED Saturday Evening, January 17, r,.i- EMPLOYES GIVEN During tho first week of January, tlio Western Auto Kupuly company distributed to its employes a bonus in the form of common stock. Kaeh employee who had been in the serv ice of the company for one calendar year, ending January J, received this bonus, amounting to one-twelfth of his annual earnings. This system of distribution has been in effect at the Western Auto Supply company during the past few yars. i be, total amount oiMnomeu this year amounted to nearly ?so,(HHi, u.i-iirding to Mr. Pepperdine, jircsl dr-nt of tho coitiniim'. Since its inception tho officials of the company have encouraged em ployes to become stockholders, until toduy a goodly portion of the out standing stock is in the hands of those who are actively employed in the service of tho company and who are responsible for the rapid growth of tho concern. This company advocates the theory that the interest of tho employer and employe nre mutual and that in or der to expect the proper coopera tion from its employes, any concern must havo the interest of tho em ploye at heart. For this reason the company finds it profitable not only to pay its co-workers salaries ns high, and in may cases higher, than the nverage wage, but also to give liberal bonuses in stock. '1 ho coni' pany urges its men to keep tho stock as well ns dividends from year to year and accumulate a worth while interest in the business. Tho A est' cru Auto Supply company employes mid officials call themselves the Western Auto family." Tho spirit of friendliness and good fellowship can bo s,een throughout the orgouizii' tion and this factor is largely, re sponsible for tho conscientious work among all its people in putting forth every possible effort toward the rapid advancement of the business. Automobile Production Is Field In Which United States Is First By ARTHUR BRISBANE One thing tho people of the United .States have done thoroughly and well, better than any other country, bet ter than all the countries put to gether, and that thing is AUTOMO BILE I'KoniNvriox. The civilization of a country Is judged by the AVI-3HAOK COM- KOKT. And on that basis THIS Is the world's CIVILl.KI) COtJNTllY. Years ago. wheu there were a few hundred nutomobiles only in all the United Slates, this writer predicted that a nation buying two million bug gies a year, to be dragged over tho muddy roads by slowly moving horses, would eventually buy millions upon millions of automobiles, nnd!t provide roads worthy of (lie aulomobilea. That prediction has iiiiie true al ready. The genius nnd Bond judg ment of American mniuiflolurora hnvo produced cars by the millions, and most wisely and fortunately for the country the constant effort has been to lower tho price and increase the quality. Only such QUANTITY mOIlUOr TION ns this nation has achieved would make possible (he reasonable prices of automobiles today. I bis is a country of high wages anil high prices. Yet, because the people buy on n big scale, nnd the- manu facturers competo earnestly in low cost production, you can buy' fbr your dollar in the United States twice ail much real automobile VALU10 as you can buy for tbut dollar in any. other country in the world. The oili er countries admit It, do not attempt to competo with this country. Thero havo been financiers and others so shortsighted as to suggest that the United Stntea spends TOO .MUCH JIONKY nu automobiles. And snmo that do not understand condi tions or true values speak of (ho automobile ns a "pleasure vehicle." Kvery dollar spent for automobiles has been WELL spent and ' has brought back two dollars in value. There is no such thing as a "pleas ure automobile." You might as well talk of "pleasure fresh air," or of a "pleasure beefsteak." i - Tho automobile saves TIME, the most valuable thing that men pos soss, the most precious, the most im portant Tho automobile, truck, tractor and gas cnglno havo doubled the life of the farmers by enabling them to ac complish twice as much in a given time. When those that read this were boys a trip to town meant that the farmer must lose a whole day. He must plow .along through the deep ruts, taking the horses from work on the farm. ' Now a "trip to town," with tlmo enough to do tbe necessary buying, means half an hour at a convenient time of day, and with the use, perhaps of ten cents worth of gasoline for the round trip. Nobody cnu estimate the value or the time nnd money that automobiles have saved for tho farmers. And what is true of farmers is true of other classes. Ask the doctors, especially those that live in sparsely Bcttled regions., Thanks to the auto mobile, their valuo has boon multi- mtm PARTS SERVICE .SALES PHONE 592 Willys-Knight and Overland RADIO -GRAM TIRES SUPPLIES STORAGE 9th & PEARL West and Sons Motor Co. ' Ask tint mechanics, of whom hun dreds of rliousands go to their work by automobile. Ask those that undcrstsnd the lab or problem. The shortage of labor, of building mechanics especially, has been largely overcome in rural reg ions by the fact that the carpenter or mason now thinks nothing of go ing ten miles to a job. The automobile bns saved every year. IX ACTUAL WORKING TIME, for this country, more than all the automobiles of the nation COST That -should be remembered, by those that talk nonsense, about "national automobile extravagance." There was a time when men plow ed, using human power to pull the "plow," a pointed piece of wood, hardened in the fire. In very ancient days, as llecius shows you in his history of ".Man I ,1.. I.' 1 1. " n,iit-A mnn bitch ed his OLD, wornout wives to the front of the plow, 'rue young wiie. .1... ..tit Ut.u.inil hint, u-nlked be hind the plow, guiding It, while hcj watched for tbe enemy irom a tree-, top. I There are places In Kurope even j now where you may occasionally sec n-nmnn hitched to a llloW. nulling : beside a cow or a donkey. Long ago in all regions or pros-j and mules replaced human beings in plowing. Nobody was foolish enough to talk about "horse extravagance." The horses EAUNKI) all that they COST,' The automobile, tractor, truck, gas engine earn all that TIIKt cost to day and ten times what they cost.' The REAL waste, tho REAL ex travagance, is seen from the window of the Tullman car on which this is written. Along a road a dozen pairs of heavy, slow horses are pulling small loads of gravel. Each pair of horses requires the time of a man driving. They move at the rate of about three miles on hour. The man and team deliver perhaps over a Bhort distance thirty or forty tons of gravel in a day at most. A big truck and trailer and one man on the same job, the loading and unloading done by mechanical opera tion, would haul and deliver easily FIVE HUNDRED TONS in the eight hours. Thus, ONE man driving the truck would do the" work of FIF TEEN men driving teams and release fourteen men for other work in a country, which, thanks to immigra tion laws, lacks workers, and will lack them more and more acutely. The REAL EXTRAVAGANCE is in using horses instead of trucks, or using workmen with picks and shovels instead of steam shovels, mechanical ditch diggers and other apparatus. The automobile means economy. But. the important thing is not econ omy, it is HUMAN HAPPINESS. Tho thing desirable is not merely saving labor, or making time more valuable. It is TO MAKE LIFE LONGER and make human families happy TOGETHER. The automobile increasing length of life, increases HAPPINESS, rep resents above all other achievements the progress and the civilization of our age. No man is better entitled to public thanks than the manufacturer of a good automobile sold at a fair price. And the price may be fair, whether it be three hundred dollars for a car, or ten thousand dollars, Every car turned out and kept running means happiness increased, time Bnved, usefulness multiplied, for somebody or some family. The automobile problem Is not yet half solved. AIn production this coun try has accomplished beyond what anybody would have dared predict. The next problem is tbe garage prob lem. Millions of people living in great cities 'would have automobiles if there were any place to keep them. To pay five hundred or one thousand dollars for a car and then pay every year more than three hundred dollars for a roof over thut car is, of course, preposterous. m Automobile men of genius, nianti factiprers and others should concen trate' on the garage problem IN THE CITIES and on tbe problem of mov ing city population to the country whero city rent will provide living quarters, PLUS GARAGE SPACE. Meanwhile, if you haven't got your automobile GET IT. If you can't af ford to keep a car ill the city then move your family. out of the city and keep a car there.
