Flax has been sucoessfully grown for some time in the vieiniiy ' of Salem, -1000 acres being raised last year. Mot of this was retted at the stale penitentiary, altlnmnh there are small retting plants at Turner ami Staylon. The fiber is sold in widely scattered markets.. One carload was sent to l.elfast, Ireland. SonV of it is sent to California for ue in n spinning mill. Much lias been said about this qua lily, hut there is no doubt that when flax is planted rijchl it shows a fine lencth and at rencth of fiber, (liven right care in harvest ins and ret tine, the flax fiber will compare with the very finest in the world. Flax grows well on soils ranging from sandy loams to heavy clay loams. In the Willamette valley are hund reds of acres of land that ore suited to the nop. It is not injurious to the s)il. as many farmers believe, but it should have a regular place in the cropping system. Rotation with other crops will keep down diseases, even though they are not nearly so serious in -Oregon as in most flax raising regions. To Himinnte the foreign flaVors so often found in market milk, Oregon dairymen nro studying the correct earn of cowa and milking toots, (.'lean, well flavored milk nnd cream means money in the producer's pocket, ne cording to the dairymen at the col lege experiment station. Tho successful producers first of all consider the cow. Thny make sure that their feed and water are tho best, ns weeds or any feed with strong obnoxious odor tninln the milk. A number of these dairymen find that digestive disorders among their rows are frequently troublesome. This is caused by poor feed during the winter and then sudden change to fresh rank pasture. Milk i easily spoiled after it Is drawn if not handled properly. The best dairymen use dry hand ntilkinR. They also strain their 'milk and cool it to (10 degrees Farenheit or under. The mixing of morning's and night's milk has been found to injure the keeping qualities. All utensils used in the handling of their milk are thoroughly washed and sterilized in boiling-hot water. Tim "unclean flavor' often found In cream is caused by washing tho sep arator only once a day. Dairymen throughout the stale have .found that if proper rare is taken with the production of milk, there is no loss because of rejection of poorly flavored milk. The pocket gopher annually causes large oses to farmers of the North west rind especially tn the Willamette valley region. Onrdcn crops und such forage plants as clover are favorite foods of the gopher. Trapping this pest is possible and is fairly effective on a 'small scale but when much ter ritory in to be covered trapping is expensive and slow. A method of poiKonmg the Willam ette valley pocket gopher has been worked out by members of the 17. S. biologicul survey, the bait recom mended being 10 pounds of green clover leaves ami one once of pow dered st ivhiiine (alkalo:d). Follow ing are the directions for mixing and using the bait: Mixing the Bait Caiher the Hover leaves fresh from the field at a lime when the dew or moisture of any kind is gone. Wet leaves will not mix satisfactorily. If gathered hi the rain, spread them out in a dry place and allow water lo dry off. Avoid gelling gras or any foreign material ni xed H h the leav , jih they are ret gnud bait and will t.iUe up strych nine th tit yboiild go on the clover leaves, tluis reducing the. efficiency of the bait. Mix by spreading the leaves on heavy paper or in a tilit. box so as to keep the Mr, i Inline from sifting through, and sprinkle the tit ivclinine in the leaves from a pepper shaker and stir until tlwroghh ini.ved. t'l'he ba k of each leaf will be of a grayish color.) o iim mix nioro than can be put out in one day. Placing the Bait An amount con sisting of two or three dozeu leaves should o plarcd at eah point of fresh active ork. Hy means of a trowel open the system from the fresh ! mounds, until ou come within arm's) reaeli of the cross iiinway, and there j pl;ue the bail. Cover the opening! by placing a clod over first and park- j ing loose dirt so that all light is ex-1 elmlrdc. The clod will keep the; loose dirt from falling down mi your bait-1 The neeitt of your hand does not I seem to make, any difference in the results obtained. The runways should be left as near to normal as possible, any undue disturbance, may cause un satisfactory results. Light getting into t he system will cut dowu the kill considerably.
