Now York An! endurance test for the trombone playing championship of the North Atlantic has juBt concluded and the title lias passed to the chulleiiKer despite claims of foul made by the loser. The umpire of the uiiiiiue event will have difficulty with his hearing for some time to come. He is being congratulated, however, on retaining his reason, although he admits that the ordeal was one that had liim on the verge ot a brutn Btorm. Hurry Brown, trombone player In tho bnnd of the Steamship Presi dent Fillmore of tho United States Lines, is no longer long distant horn tooter of the North Atlantic. Wearing the laurels of victory to day is Carl Jacob, trombonist ex traordinary In the band of the Bteamshlp George Washington. He Is not champion because of greater lung power, nor because of better Hp control, but rather because of an unexpected calamity that put the former champion hors do com hat. But being a good sport, as well as an excellent trombonist, the new champion declares he will shortly give his dethroned advers ary another try for tho title. Brown enme Into the trombone tooting tltje after a series of elim ination contests and won his crown after a decisive victory In Bremer haven, Germany, when the top- notch performer of another steam ship line went down before his glorious blasts. Then came the challenge from Jacob of the Steam Bhln George Washington. The battle wns staged on the deck of the Stenmpshlp President Fillmore. According to the rules of the contest the men were to play continuously fur two hours and If nuitlier guvo up tooting before that time the cliuiupluuship was to be decided ou poinm. V. T. Robert son, port Stewart of the United States Lines, was chosen as um pire. Each player decided as to his musical selections, the agree ment being that neither would re peat tho sumo piece during the two hours of the contest. At a signal from the Umpire Uis contest was on and the terrilla rumpus that followed caused many of the spectators to hold their ears. At the end of the first hour the re sult seemed about even and then both of the trombonists redoubled their efforts. About ten minutes of playing was left when an awful thing happened. Tho champ happened to look under a life-boat and was greeted by av sight that caused cold preaperatlon to break out upon him. Under thej boat was a grinning stewart lustily sucking upon a lemon. Try as lira might to avoid the sight Brown's eyes could not resist the lemon sucker. Sour notes began to Issue from the trombone of Brown. His moutli began to pucker and his eyes) seemed to pop from his head. In stead of music there came forth from his Instrument a weird, pro longed moan aa though from a great boast In mortnl agony. The moan diminished, droned down and ceased. The champion could not blow a note. Tho contest was over and Jacob wur declared winner. He had not seen the lemon-sucker and continued to play for the full two hours. Members of the count ing board of precinct 201 were cooling their heels in the witness room outfciflo the 'Multnnmnh itouiity grand jury chambers in the sourthouse this morning, waiting their turns to tell their stories. The Olcott-llnll recount showed a dis crepancy of 40 votes between the re count and the original official count The grand jud.v itself counted the ballots last week, when the mnltcr wns brought be fore them. Chairman Hnekenberrv of the dnv "board was before the grand jury this morning nt. his own request and com pleted his testimony shortly before II o'clock. Tho members of tho coinitliifr bonrd on hand were William If. Einerich (Chairman), M. It. Ilollnnn (judge). Virgil A. Crum. Anna A. Cnuu, Anna A. Mnllory, and C. S. West. They were not subpoenaed, Inasmuch as the law states that anyone subpoenaed before a grand jury cannot be indicted by thai grand iury. Action must await a new grnnd jury. Stanley Myers, district attorney, called the members nf the hoard together, how ever, and told them that if they wished they could apnear voluntarily before the grand jury. All quickly agreed.
