ANOTHER $100,000 SENATOR.
It seems quite probable that another $100,000 senator
was "put over" by Edward Hines and the lumber trust. They
re cnargea wun navmg engineered the campaign which re
suited in the seleotion of United States Senator Isaao Stephen
son of Wisconsin. Both branches of the Wisconsin legislature
nave lormauy petitioned the senate to Investigate the oharges
that Mr. Stephenson was elected by the corrupt use of money.

members declared that the election had been secured by oor
ruption and that $107,000 had been expended for that purpose.
This seems to be the market prioe of trust senators, Judg
od by the Lorimer case. Senator Stephenson does not deny that
large sums of money were spent In his election, admitting that
$98,000 was used, but declares that this was for legitimate
purposes. This is more money than the senator will receive dur
tag his fuU term of office as salary. When men or their friends
are willing and anxious to put out suoh enormous sums for the
purpose of serving their oountry gratuitously the facts oon

that a further Indebtedness of $07,000 will bankrupt the com
amity. Therefore, it might not be out of place for the same
orporation to state how much mortgage bonded indebedness
covers the properties of the Oregon Power Co., which must be
met by revenues exacted from the people of Eugene. Also how
much capital stock this community 1, expected to pay dividends
upon n addition to the heavy operating expenses of a steam
plant. Is it not possible that worry over the possible bankruptcy
