Some of tho fine points in the subtle art of slaughtering a trou blesome enemy were gone into during the day. Half a dozen minor engage ments were planned and fought In theory, the officers marching for miles in the working out of the prob lems given them for somton. Map-reading und reconnaissance were the principal subjects of study. Map-reading was taken up in the forenoon and gone Into exhaustively, the Importance of accuracy and exact knowledge In handling field maps being strongly Impressed upon all. It was pointed out that a small mistake in reading n military map may re sult not only In tha annihilation of the offending regiment, but possibly In the defeat of the entire forco involved. Dotailed maps of the whole district for miles about had been prepared previously after weeks of labor by officers of the army. It was shown that by these maps, which appear mennlngless at first glance, the ex pert may get instantly a correct un derstanding of the nature of the re gion quite as clearly us from a great panoramic photograph. Reconnoissance was taken up In tho afternoon In a series of tactical walks. The problems were simple, In volving the conduct of small patrols out for information of the enemy. While the guardsmen showed a thor ough knowledge of the subject much valuable information was ogtained from tho expert regulars who keep abreast of all the late wrinkles in the exact science of warfare. Sixty non-commissioned officers are receiving Instruction at the same time under a detail of non-commissioned officers from Vancouver barr racks. A depo sit of kaolin has been discovered In the mountains about 25 miles east of Roseburg. Kaolin Is a high grade of clay. It Is the chief material used In the manufacture of the finest chinawaro and general porcelain goods and an industry of immense proportions may result from tho dis covery. It is said there is only one other known deposit of kaolin . In the Un ited States, in Colorado. This has not proved productive enough to supply the domestic demand and in consequence large quantities of the soil have been imported from China. With the homo demand greatly ex ceeding the available supply, the pos sibilities for the operation of the kaolin industry In this county on a large scale will readily be seen. 'The discovery was made by Dr. W. E. Oillesple, of Eugene. A sam ple of the soil sent to the Oregon Agricultural college for analysis brought the information that It was kaolin of the highest quality. Dr. Gillespie Interested a number of Eu gene and Roseburg friends and claims were surveyed and staked and location filings tendered to the county clerk's office.
