ery day of life should find us ranking nil the people wise, to our
coming and our Kolng nothing comes to him who's coy; all our
wares we would he showing, If the limelight we'd enjoy. Let us
sink the bland reporters If they do not hunt for us; seek them In
dismal quarters, In their Inky, pasty muss; giving them our warm
opinions of all things beneath the sky; over all the earth's domln-
Ions let Imagination fly. Famous men? The crowds adore them
Lions thrive In every land! Let us keep our names before them
and they'll cheer to beat the band! Let our pictures oft be printed
lust the people should forget, even though the section tinted is the
only pluce we get. Hotter have our faces beaming on the pink or
yellow page t li it n to have the people dreaming that we are no more
the rage. Advertising! - Let the grocer pay for space to bill his
name; shall we do It? Not for Joe, sir! That Is not the great
man's game. We are onto smoother enpers than the merchants
often see; wo have learned to work the papers, and to get our
booming free.

The city of Detroit is trying a novel plan for deriving reve
nue from its streets by renting them to the street railway com
pany. The franchises expire this week, and the city legislators
, have taken advantege of this to assert the absolute proprietor -:
ship of the city in the streets- and its natural landlord right to
charge a rental therefor. The resolution takes advantage of
the provision of a new constitution which denies the railways
the power to operate without a franchise from the city. The
rental value is fixed at $300 a day. The new scheme does not
involve municipal ownership and neither does it assert or lean
toward any city ownership of the street car plant, but only of
the streets, in which the rails are placed. In short, it is no til
ing more nor loss than a form of ground rent.
The report of the United States delegates to the International
Congress on Alcoholism, held in London last July, now made pub
lic by the state department, is to the effect that "alcohol is a
foe to man's welfare."" The report will be received with gloom,
horror and sadness in many quarters regrets at thought of all
the beers that could have beon bought with the money used in
sending delegates to London to find out something that every
body here already knew,

An advance of 10 per cent in the price of furniture, to take
effect at the opening of the spring season in January, is in pros
pect, according to the members of the National Furniture Manu
facturers' Association, The association is holding its annual
convention in Chicago, and all the leading furniture makers from
Grand Rapids and other centres are represented.
This is the real football day of the season, both East and
West, Yale and Harvard meet in their annual struggle, and here
iii the Northwest Oregon and Idaho will battle in Portland
and Washington and 0. A. C. at Corvallis. This evening's Guard
will toll its readers how these great gridiron contests resulted
Alfred I. Dupont, practically head of the Dupont powder
trust, has brought suit for heavy "damages against a relative,
Mrs. Elizabeth B. Dupont, for alleged "vulgar and untrue" state
ments made about his Alfred's wife. Evidently all the ex
plosions in this famed family don't occur in powder magazines.
A Chicago man just returned from Africa brings the word
that Mr. Rooaevolt is much distressed at the reports reaching
this country of his "indiscriminate slaughter" of animals when
in fact he is slaying only necessary specimens. The setting
right of this point will probably afford considerable consolation
for the speoimens.

George J. Gould in an interview gives out a very good set of

If the report is true that Colonel John Jacob Astor has set
tled ten million dollars on his now divorced wife, then he is being

tenced to six years' imprisonment for horse-stealing? When
eight years old he was convicted of train-wrecking. "Give the

approve the bond issue should be held in the near future, so that

Great Northern engineers have be
gun work in the Lake Chelan dis
trict for the development of 80,000
horsepower of electrical energy to he
used In operating the western division
of the railroad. Title to the power
sites was secured several years ago.
The Great Northern is now running
Its trains through the Cascade tunnel
by electric power, but the Leaven
worth station, which supplies the
country, develops only 12,000 horsepower.
