THE ECOINE DAILY GUABD, MONDAY JUNE 21, 1909. TOE -EUGENE DAILY GUARD UVAKl) PKINT1NG OO., NO. Cliulra H. Fln-3r MONDAY, JUNE 21, 1909. There are prospects of several factories being established in Eugene. Probably these will not be large concerns, but it must be remembered that most successful enterprises begin on a small scale. Payrolls will come with increasing population and the latter is certain if we proceed to develop the country along the right lines. Eectric rairoads will make small farm ing profitable and densely popuate the Willamette valley with in a decade. Dr. William Osier says : "Whether tuberculosis will be fin ally eradicated is even an open question. It is a foe that is very deeply intrenched in the human race. Very hard it will be to eradicate completely, but when we think of what has been done in one generation, how the mortality in many places has been reduced more than 50 per cent it is a battle of hope, and so long as we are fighting with hope, the victory is in sight." There are laborless jobs a-plenty, but, with few exceptions, those who hold them down soon find out that they are also payless. If you want to be sure to cop the coin, you've got to get busy. . . Cleveland s most prominent Presbyterian minister thus bucks on the anti-tobacco resolution adopted by the recent gen eral assembly of his church: "It is no sin to smoke; I use tobacco and will continue to do so." And there are others. The meanest wife has been found. She made a phono graphic record of hubby's snores and turned it loose on him just as he had said to a pretty widow: "No gentleman ever snores." However, no matter how high the price of lemons may go it will not, for an obvious reason, affect either price or quality of circus lemonade. Moreover, the real .story of those African killings will not be unown, untu tnose doUar-a-word magazine sketches begin to appear.
